My FH only told the night of....it was better that way. My parents knew how much i wanted it, and proceeded to drink a bunch of wine in order to calm down before I called them. lol They called my whole family....it was cute...if they new any sooner in advance I think they might have spilled the beans...

My FH did ask my mom. Unfortunately he never got to ask my dad, but my mom answered for the both of them. I don't think my FH would have done it on his own. I hinted in so many ways that my mom really wanted him to ask. I was in the next room when he did it. I knew what was going on, but he never mentioned it to me. Of course my mom couldn't keep a secret!

yes! He took my dad out to lunch that day and asked for his blessing. My dad of course said yes!!! He even showed my dad the ring to get his opinion.

he asked me if i would want him to and at first i laughed and asked if people still do that, and then i changed my mind and said i thought it would be nice if he asked my parents for their BLESSING or SUPPORT as opposed to their PERMISSION.

MY FH tried to ask my stepfather (my dad passed away 3 years ago) on Christmas day, but could never get him alone. So a few days after Christmas before we went away, he went to where my stepfather (I call him dad because he's been my 'Dad' for 26 years) works and asked him. I have three younger sisters who kept hounding my dad...but he never said a word to anyone and when we finally called from Disney the night he he proposed, both FH and my dad told me the story! I thought it was great!

Mine didn't. He gets nervous about that kind of stuff, and he also wanted NO ONE to know he was doing it (as if they didn't all expect it after 5.5 years of dating .... ). The only people who knew were the jeweler and his best friend, who he told only because the jeweler was a connection through the friend :)

no not really but he knew how much it meant to me and coming from our family upbringings he didnt think otherwise...it was just an obvious thing for us and for him to do....a respect thing....
but it all depends on living situations...age...how close you are with your family and what not
so either way it all goes by what feels right....

except we went to my parents house the morning of the engagement before it actually happened and my brother and father were congratulating him i had no idea why so my mom and SIL had to make up some crazy story - I WAS CLUELESS

He was talking to my parents (mom and step dad) about it, I dont know that he asked, he more like told them. But we were already together 5 years so he's like their son. He never asked my father. My father lives out in Florida and they hardly know eachother but my dad is very happy.
