Difference between knitting and crocheting?

I posted this on NWR but then I remembered we have a craft board...

ok, call me stupid, but what's the difference between the 2? I want to learn one and I'm not sure which one to go for. Can someone please tell me the difference?

Re: Difference between knitting and crocheting?

Crocheting uses a single hook to pull loops of yarn through another loop of yarn to create the stitches. You work with just one loop one the hook.

Knitting uses two pointy-ended needles to create the stitches. You work with several loops on the needles.

I think knitting offers much more variety of styles, stitches and patterns you can create if you want to do sweaters.

Crocheting may be easier for beginners to learn how to handle and manipulate the yarn. If you want to do something simple like scarves or afghans it's a good choice.

I am better at knitting...but I started on crocheting (very young...about 6 my mom taught me - and I would just make snakes...lol)

crocheting is a bit more protable...but I like the variety of stiches I know in knitting....

maybe do a search online for pics and see which stiches you like best...

Thanks ladies. I want to make something for my best friend who's having 2 boys. One of my friends is making blankets so I want to learn how to do something else. I think I'll look into crocheting.

I love to crochet, it is definetly easier than knitting. Knitting does offer more variety, though!

i love crocheting!!! i think for blankets and scarves, crocheting is easier and faster than knitting. if you get a fat hook like an N, you can make a scarf in a weekend or two. all you need is the basic single crochet stitch.

also - as a frequent business traveler (i am in Cincinnati as we speak) - you can not bring knitting needles onto a plane, but you can bring a crochet hook (can't bring scissors, either).
