His is Latin, really fun, welcoming and laid back.
Mine is snotty, Jewish and not as welcoming.
I'm sort of nervous about getting them together.
Anyone else dealing with this issue?

Re: Differences in families
We (both families) have the same background - we are all Italian.
But his family is just a lot different in how they do things - its not that im not close to my parents but FH's family has had a rough road so i think they arent sure how to move forward and still holding on a bit.
FH and I dont see eye to eye on things - nothing too serious but situations present themselves where we both need to take steps back and see it from the other families POV.

my parents have met his ONCE years ago. My family obviously knows Anthony and his know me. I'm very involved in his.
My family just isn't the whoohoo get together family and his is all about the party.
Honestly, I'm sooo nervous about getting them together.

Re: Differences in families
EXACT SAME BOAT!!! I am from a happy christian family that now mostly resides in the south; his parents are off-the-boat jews. We have been dating almost 7 years, and they have yet to meet. For seriously the first 5 years, I would take everything they say personally and there were MULTIPLE times when his mom would bring to tears by 'voicing her opinion'. Now, I have learned they will never be like me, and I will never be like them- which I think is a BIG reason why FH fell in love with me. My family loves him (my mom refers to him as her favorite child). Trust me, you are not alone in this situation!

Re: Differences in families
We were worried the first Christmas we were all together - the first meeting of the parents was akward, to say the least, but at this point everything is great and everyone in the immediate families get along. As for extended families meeting each other at the wedding I don't care what they think - it's the only time everyone will be together. My dad will be fine and is a very likable guy, so not worried about him and the extended family; and FH's parents are nice, so they should be fine with my extended family.

Re: Differences in families
I'd say our families are pretty much similar. Both are very all about family and do lots of stuff together. Everyone is very outgoing and easy to get a long with. The two have yet to fuse together, but our parents get along with one another when they do see each other (our dads especially since they are in the same line of business).
and as far as background
My Family: quite a mixture - we have Italian, Austrian, Irish, Chinese, El Salvadorian, Middle Eastern - I have quite the eclectic family LOL
FH: All Irish with some italians in the mix

you can only hope for the best. you are marrying each other. your families - if they don't want to, never have to see each other, except for some events, but even then, like if its a granchild's birthday [arty - you can always celebrate on different days to keep them apart if you have to.
and honestly - them not liking each other is NOT your problem. so if they don't get along, at least be civil and then just leave

my family is nice. I mean, they're just not at all alike and I'm so worried they wont have anything to talk about.
Did I mention, my Mom is a royal PITA and will be a *****? My Dad is amazing. Everyone likes him. My Mom is critical and I know sjhe'll have something to say. My FMIL is so nice, but sorta loony.
I'm planning a BBQ in the spring . Maybe that will help. It will only be my parents etc and his family, not my Grandmother, aunts etc, but I hope that will be an ice breaker.
LOL, I'm actually having a mini anxiety attack thinking about it all.

Re: Differences in families
My family is your typical Irish-Americans. We're loud, we drink, there's always a party, and it's 5:00 somewhere.
His fam is Bengali-American and Muslim...much more subdued and quiet. No drinking (among the elders...the young people drink but hide it).
They all met at my grandma's memorial service last year...yep, at an Irish wake...I was shytting bricks over it but everything went well. His fam was definitely a bit uncomfortable there, but let's face it...anytime you go into a new situation you're uncomfortable, and it's not always a bad thing.
It was the first time my parents even met his' (as my parents live in FL)...it actually almost helped that it was a big group of people, as opposed to just a few...lots more talking and storytelling going on.
You'll be fine. When the day came for them all to meet, I just said 'you know what, whatever happens, happens'...and everything was as cool as it could be, when you combine a bunch of heavy drinkers with a few devout Muslim non-drinkers.
Good luck!

Re: Differences in families
I am Puerto Rican and his family is Italian. They are great people but can be a bit snooty. I am so nervous about getting the two families together. It doesn't help that my mom speaks very little English.

Re: Differences in families
My family is awesome. Hands down. Very fun, welcoming and always have a great time at family get-togethers. FH's immediate family consists of his snooty POS aunt, her alcohlic bf, and his cousin who never bothers to contact any of us.. FH's dad's side of the family are exactly like mine. They have met and got along wonderful!!!! So the only time my family will be meeting his immediate family is at the wedding. After that, we're cutting all contact with them. Bad environment to be around especially when we have children.

Re: Differences in families
Sometimes I am. My parents and his don't have much in common, and there is quite an age difference between the two. ALSO... the other day FMIL was like, am I going to like your parents? so..... that makes me nervous also
