Dipping a ring
So, FH's father wants to give him his wedding ring, which was given it him by his father. It's just a plain gold band. But, FH is not loving the gold look, so I told him I think he may be able to dip it. Does anyone know if this can be done or where would be a good place? I remember my coworker saying her white gold ring turns yellow and she gets it dipped, but forgot to ask her today and now were on vacation til Jan. We were hoping to get it done over our school break. Thanks ladies!

You can get it dipped in rhodium by your jeweler. It can costs anywhere from 25-35 dollars but doesn't last long. I guess it depends on the daily wear, but it'll get costly doing it so often. It may just be best to invest in a white gold setting or whatever your FH prefers.

You can get a ring dipped pretty much at any jeweler. Most of my jewelry is white gold so I have to get it dipped every few years. I typically don't get charged because the jewelry is purchased from there, but it can cost anywhere from about 20-50 depending on what it is you're getting dipped.

Ok. Didn't realize it wouldn't last so long :( kinda a bummer. The whole point was that the ring was his grandfathers, then dads, now his. I guess I'll talk to our jeweler. If it's gonna wear off and have to be done every few months he may just need to get used to gold! Lol

I have a gf who did this with her ring. She had gotten a yellow gold engagement ring, and really wasn't too into it. Rather than get a new setting she dipped it, but had to do so every few months since the gold kept peaking through. Her jeweler told her it really wasn't worth it after a while though so they invested in a new setting. But def talk to your jeweler and see what they say. My gf is a nurse so the constant hand washing/hand sanitizer affect that too.I think the fact that the ring has been passed down through his family is really cool though!

Platinum doesn't change but I think white gold is yellow gold dipped in 'white.' I think. My ring is platinum so I'm not 100% sure. I have other white gold jewelry that hasn't changed color either, but I don't wear them everyday so maybe that's why???

I don't think its anything to worry about. All white gold jewelry eventually have to be dipped at the very least once, since theres really no such thing as white gold. its just yellow gold dipped in rhodium. Some people I know have dipped their rings once in many yrs of owning it, while others in a few months, or not at all (but does have a lot of scratches). It depends on the person's skin, daily use, and whether something rubs against it too often. The reason my friend went with a new platinum setting is bc of her profession and the constant abuse her ring got. She use to clean it with rubbing alcohol after she came home from work, so you can imagine it not lasting long.

White gold isn't just yellow gold dipped in rhodium, it is a gold alloy mixed with other white metals. So the normal color of white gold can have a bit of yellow to it. Rhodium gives it that bright white shiny finish. When this wears off it can start to look yellow again. I have read that you should expect to redip your ring about once a year. The nice thing about redipping is that it'll look brand new! :)

Don't they have to take the diamonds out to dip it though? I'm terrified that they'll switch out my diamond for a cheaper one. That's why I haven't gotten it dipped even though it's getting a little yellow.
No, they don't remove the diamonds. They should be able to do it while you wait.
I have mine done for free at Michael Finas where the ring was purchased. I am very hard on my ring and have it done every 6 months wherever it needs it or not.
For me, it's not a problem and completely worth it.

I have my grandmothers wedding band that I wear every day. Its half platinum and half white gold. (when my mom got it she had it sized to her finger and they had to do it in white gold because it was less money so the part that is platinum is the original diamonds and the original setting).Anyway...
Point is.... the last time I got it dipped was a year and a half ago when I had to get it resized (AGAIN) to my fingers to make it smaller. I wear it everyday. I take it off when I shower and do my nails. Its still not yellowing.
My jeweler is awesome. She's in east northport. Ive been going to them for years!

My ring is white gold and I have had it now for over two years. It still looks white gold and I wear it all the time- sleeping, showering, cleaning, etc. It is clearly white gold, but it has lost a little bit of sparkle to it. I plan to have it dipped before the wedding, since it will be back on center stage for the day. However, if my wedding wasn't coming, I don't think the dip would exactly be necessary.Welcome New Vendors
