Disaster Strikes! (Long) - Updated (p2)

Haven't posted in a few days. I was just so upset and embarassed that I couldn't bring myself to tell you ladies.

Tuesday night, 12 days before the wedding, my Mom who has been footing almost the entirety of the bill for the wedding, announced she could not pay for anything else, and that the CH alone is still owed over $8,000!

The total amount outstanding is about 10k, and FH and I do not happen to have that money floating around. We are in a panic. We have cancelled our honeymoon, and asked FILs to give us the entirety of our gift in advance, but have no idea if this is going to cover all that plus the incidental last minute expenses we are all so familliar with.

Perhaps the worst part of all was HOW she did it: with a sense of entitlement. I understand if she feels that other parties should have contributed more, but perhaps that is something to have been addressed MONTHS ago, when we all could have saved up for it. She was disrespectful and humilation to myself and my FH, which in turn infuriated his parents, whose house we were all at to have dinner.

To top it all off, we found out that she lied about how much she had paid toward the wedding to the tune of about $9k! And she would not give it to us straight about exactly how much was owed, either! She claims she 'didn't know.' How could that POSSIBLY be? How could you throw a wedding, sign contracts, pay money, and not realize how much it costs?

I don't want my mom to not pay her mortgage, or my little sister not to return to private school in the fall, but I also want to be able to go to school and pay my rent!

I am utterly freaking out....

Yikes!

Aren't there places in which you can get an emergency loan?

First of all have a sit down with your mom. You have to get this all out in the open. Then maybe you can work out something with her where she will pay the remaining balance initially and you will pay her back over time or with some of the gifts from the wedding.

It was completely childish to pin this on you in this way.

Two options are - get a new credit card that has no interest for 6 months

Also if you can sign over checks and cash that you recieve at the wedding

I hope it all works out for you

are you clos to any aunts and uncles that you can take a loan out from and pay pack later - that sounds better than asking for their gift early

I agree. Get it all out in the open so you can figure out exactly how much needs to be paid.

Did she offer you an explanation as to why she suddenly can't afford it when she committed herself to it in the first place?

Yes, see if you can take a loan out from, relatives. You can easily pay it, back in do time. It is an emergency. Is the hall pounding you to pay right away. Maybe, you can pay on the day of the event in full.

Good Luck

These things happen so unexpectely.

I am so sorry and wish I had lots of advice for you but I don't. The only thing I could suggest would be a loan.
I do agree that your mom should have told you sooner. Again, I am sorry!

Re: Disaster Strikes! (Long)

I would ask your mom if there was any way that she could lay the money out just until after the wedding. She should have told you this a long time ago. Can you take a loan from FH's parents? Maybe if you told the catering hall what happened, maybe they would consideer letting you put it on a credit card or maybe you can talk to them nicely and ask for a payment plan after the wedding. Keep me updated

So sorry!

I would ask relatives and close friends. I know that a collegue of mine went through a similiar ordeal and we took up a collection at work to help her out. Though it didn't come close to what she needed , it did help a little. Never underestimate the kindness of strangers! If that doesn't work or if you need more, I would also try a credit card and/or emergency loan.

I hope it works out and I'll keep you in my prayers!
