I went to Michaels over the weekend and took a look at their boxed invites...has anyone ever purchased them and DIY'ed their own invites? Was it easy? Any problems? How was the quality?

I haven't gotten up to invitations yet, but I've heard a lot of the girls say good things about them!

oooh - good to hear - i think i'm definitely considering on doing that to help save some $!
That's how we did our invites! We bought the Wilton boxed invites and printed them and they came out really nice... There is a picture with my invite in it in my album!

Yup! My regular home printer is a Lexmark all-in-one, and that's what we used! I got the invites from Walmart. We only sent out 95 since we are having a fairly small wedding, and so we only needed two boxes of 50. With our invites costing under $50, we saved quite a bit of money!

Re: DIY Boxed Invitations
I was there over the weekend and was suprised to see all the new styles they came out with - even pocketfolds (that may be at ac moore). But am using one for my RD invites - they look really nice. They didn't have all this stuff a few months ago when I needed them They are easy to do, I did DIY invites.

Go to Michael's website and register for an account. They will email you a coupon for 50% off one regular priced item. I think it is effective for 2 weeks.
I am getting the black pocketfold invites. My FH & I went to Michael's this weekend & bought 4 boxes for $80! I also plan to get my save the dates and favor boxes from Michael's as well.

Re: DIY Boxed Invitations
I bought some DIY invites from staples just to see how difficult it would be and it wasn't. The company that made the invites had a template on their website to use and all I had to do was write what I wanted and print it out.
It wasn't bad at all.

I am using the exact same invites you are looking into. I have been putting them together the last couple days. I really like them, the only tricky part is the ribbon. They don't give you enough ribbon to go around the invitation card like it shows in the picture, so you have to cut them and assemble your own ribbon and glue it on somehow...still trying to figure it out lol!

oooh - which michaels did you go to get them? when i went to the one in mahasset they didn't have it - i only saw them in the one in westchester!
eta: are you cutting the ribbon that's included or you bought new ribbon to use instead?

Re: DIY Boxed Invitations
I bought mine at michaels and hated them. They were kinda flimsy and looked cheap. I ended up returning them and ordering invitations from Joann.com.. (the fabric store). I love my new invitations. and i found 3 coupon codes for 50% off online so i bought them 3 times to get the discount on all of them lol. I ended up spending like 60 bucks for 75 invitations and finally got exactly what i wanted. they look very expensive

Re: DIY Boxed Invitations
don't know if Michael's still is carrying the one I used since they have brought in alot of different styles but I used one from Anna Griin series which was a flat 5x7 card with vellum overlay tied at top with ribbon. the card is sturdy and printed up nicely. see below.
I was able to use the pic on Michael's website of the invilte to print the rose on the RSVP card to dress that up a bit. doing it yourself gives you a chance to be creative.
I only needed about 60 invites but they came in boxes of 50 for $39 so had a lot leftover. If anyone in similar situation - - since I printed the wording myself, I used the leftover ones, reworded them and used for my bridal shower thank yous!!!. the girls were impressed and thought I bought co-ordinating cards for this purpose .
I also used the rsvp envelopes for tips. nice size to fit in a tux pocket.
Also Michael's will take ACMoore coupons from circulars and newspapers - - not printed from the PC

Re: DIY Boxed Invitations
my friend who is getting married just sent me those michaels invites!!
They came out nice.. the issue she had with them was the sticker that goes on the back to seal them shut. They weren't very good.. so she added a piece of double sided tape underneath
The invites printed out very nice with a regular printer
oh also, the issue she had with the invites was that there aren't any extra address labels.. and they don't sell just them separately. So she had to shell out another $40 just to get extra labels!

Re: DIY Boxed Invitations
I am having to cut the same ribbon that came in the box. I live in Indiana so I got them at a Michael's store here. The paper is really nice but I agree with the other poster about the labels. The set only comes with labels for the invitation and not the rsvp envelope. I also had to buy extra cards for the reception info because you only get one little card per invitation, and I had to use that for the RSVP...so if you need additional cards for reception information or directions you have to buy those also.

Re: DIY Boxed Invitations
I just finished mine minutes ago! Thank goodness.
I bought the chocolate brown ones at Michael's that have a pocket and ribbon. They came out really nicely and I didn't have the problems with the ribbons that others mentioned. They wrapped around perfectly, but I used a piece of cardboard to tie them around and then slipped them off and put them on the invites. I bought nice ivory paper that I used to print directions and used clear address labels for the response cards. Everything else was included and the quality was great. I also had FH create a custom seal with our monogram to replace the ones that came in the box.
When I was first looking at the ones in stores, a lot of them looked really nice but had really flimsy envelopes. Just make sure to open the box and look at all the pieces before you pick one. Good luck!

Re: DIY Boxed Invitations
I'm so glad to hear that people have had good experiences with the DIY invites; this is definitely something I've been thinking of doing in order to save some $$$. I have an AC Moore and a Michael's both within walking distance of my apartment...this could be dangerous, LOL!
