So after seeing this post on the DIY board, I feel motivated to make own Bo-ks. I already decided I want to make my own CPs. Honestly, to me flowers are one of the least important things in my wedding.
I'm also considering doing DIY invites, table numbers, flower girl baskets, cardboxes, 'We Do' letters, and bows for the church.
I'm not worried about how much it is in terms of the workload. I know my MOH will help, and I still have a year and half to do all this.
My main concern is will my wedding be tacky if I have too much DIY? Will it just look like one big arts and crafts project?
I need your honest opinions before my heart is set on having one big @ss DIY wedding!!!

Re: DIY: How much is too much?
I think if you do a trial run on the DIY projects and see how they turn out first then make your decision. If you are a crafty person then I think everything will turn out great.
I personally would never do DIY projects because I don't have the patience and also i am a visual merchandiser and i do DIY projects all week at work so i would not want to add another one to my list.

If you can do it... go for it. I don't have the patience or the artistry... that's why I pay the experts :)
Try them out first get some honest opinions and go from there.

Re: DIY: How much is too much?
I agree about doing a trial run through first. If your diy projects come out looking just as good as a professional, then I say go for it. Honestly I would not be doing as many DIY's if I didn't feel they measured up to the work I see professionals do. If they look great, no one will even know that they're a DIY project. I support your decision all the way, I say go for it!
P.S. Keep in mind that a lot of professionals started out as regular DIY gals!!!!

If you are crafty, I dont think anything is too much. In the long run it not only saves money, but you get more involvement with your wedding, and people are amazed to know how much time and effort you took to make your wedding special and unique

Re: DIY: How much is too much?
It depends on whether they scream 'homemade' in a bad way.... I made tons of DIYs for my wedding and they were a big hit, but I really wanted them to look well done. Our menus and programs and placecard squares were printed on linen cardstock, not regular computer paper. I downloaded nice fonts that matched our invitation and which looked really elegant.
I had our DIY table number photos printed by a local camera shop, rather than on my printer (I dont even have a color printer). etc
I'll admit I've seen sloppy DIYs but you have plenty of time to do it right. FM me if you want pictures

only if you ask for it. i have no problem giving my honest opinion, but sometimes my honest opinion is harsh so i usually just comment on something i like unless it's a spelling error. if you want honest, i am happy to give honest

Good DIYing looks professional. Vanessa makes the pros look bad with her DIY stuff.
My FMIL has DIYed alot of things for my FSIL and it looks very arts-and-crafts-summer-camp-macaroni picture. SO of course DIY can go horribly wrong.

Re: DIY: How much is too much?
def do trial runs so that you can see if they look clean and crisp as oppose to looking like something that was just thrown together, as long as everything looks neat then you should be fine. hell most people will be more impressed than think its tacky IMO

I would totally do as much as you can. I'm trying, its tough but I feel so accomplished when I am done. Good Luck colleen!!
BTW - You can get flowers from Stop&shop, the women there are very knowledgable and can totally help you. I even saw a florist I met with there buying flowers, I won't mention who though.

I think DIY stuff is great. My only concern is if you using fresh flowers, are you really going to want to deal with that day of?
Im contemplating making my own invitations but I'm not 100% sold on it yet.

I plan on using silk flowers. The one in the original post of the bride that made her own bok used silk ones and they looked so pretty!

Colleen, I thought I would never be able to afford flowers. With my floral budget, I thought my girls would have to walk down the aisle with one single calla lillie. I was deathly afraid of going to the florist!!! On a whim I decided to put a thread in vendors helping brides and Mike from flower barn quoted me an amazing price. I thought I was dreaming when I read the FM. I was like, 'huh?? I can afford real flowers!!!' I feel like it really saved me a lot of stress. I'm not saying to totally give up on the idea of diy'ing your flowers but just try to get some quotes from florists first because you may be pleasantly surprised. The more detailed you are (including the type of flowers you like), the more realistic quote you'll get. HTH!
