DJ - MC or no MC

DJ - MC or no MC

We're in the midst of picking a dj and I'm wondering....do you need an MC too? I'm afraid of having someone in your face. I already had a Bat Miztvah - I don't need anyother one....

Any thoughts?

I am not having an MC....we didn't feel we needed one, plus it saved us some $$$ which is what we needed to do in our case. The dj company did say that they would give us a 'veteran' dj in that case since there will only be one.

I did not have a separate MC. It was fine, he did a good job on his own.

My husband is a DJ and I am often his 'Emcee'..

I only announce the bridal party, any announcements that they want made and the whole garter/bok tossing (if they want it...)

IMO chatty Emcees are distracting...

but it really depends on the crowd... if your family is the type that can dance in a corner with an ipod playing, then you don't really need a motivator..

We did not have an MC. This is how we decided...do you think that someone walking around will get people up and dancing? If the answer is yes then get one...in my case whoever wasnt dancing was not going to get up for someone trying to get them up...so we did not do an MC.

Your DJ can still do all the announcements, etc. you dont need a seperate MC for this

My friend did just a dj & it was fine- he did all the announcing for them and it saved them some $$- plus as a guest. it made no difference and it was just as nice with an mc as without

These were our thoughts too! We didn't want someone going to our older relatives and dragging them onto the dance foor. It's a wedding, they are going to see people they haven't seen in a while, if they want to dance, they'll dance on their own.....

our package came with one, but we found it useful mainly b/c in our opinion, you want your dj spinning, not necessarily multitasking and tracking down everyone for the various points of your reception. i also think its good for volume control. the dj may not be able to really gauge how loud things are getting, where as having an mc who is not tethered to the table, can get a sense of how things are in your room. and not all mc's are in your face the entire time. i think its important though that you meet with your mc and make sure you are comfortable with them and aren't off put by their personality. some can be really pushy which isn't a good thing.

good luck!

we had a separate MC ---but that was just something we wanted because we needed announcements and stuff to be done in english/spanish. but he wasn't an in your face dj at all. he kept the talking to a minimum and i did not want him to be a 'party motivator' at all....since the music does that for us.

but you might not need an MC at all for your wedding.

We LOVED our MC. Not even a little bit in your face, or loud and distracting. He actually coordinated with the staff at our RH to keep things running smoothly - timing announcements, CP giveaway, BOK/garter toss, speeches, etc. On top of giving the elderly ladies at our wedding a thrill by dancing with them! He was a ton of fun on the dance floor, to boot!

Buuut, it really depends on what you want. I was hesitant at first, for the reasons you mentioned, but I watched videos of a few MCs in action at the DJ company I went with. After seeing MC Fred, I *knew* I wanted him at my wedding, and I think I made a great decision!

No you absolutely don't need to get one. We booked one but we have the type of crowd that will get up and dance.

At first I did want a DJ and an MC- DH convinced me that with 100 people at the wedding we didn't need a MC- and he was right- I think it's more for the larger parties and yes, do you really need someone in everyone's face?

wow you all are awesome. thanks for the input. I'm deciding now between hank lane dj which does not have an MC and Tommy TUnes which can have either. I think we need to go see them in action to see if we need an MC. I'm so conflicted! I hope I have a dancing crowd but its a sunday afternoon so who knows?!!?

In addition to what I said earlier, just letting you know we went with Tommy's Tunes and LOVED them. Also, we only had 100 people, during a day wedding, who needed no encouragement to dance, and are still very happy we went with MC Fred.

Not trying to sway your opinion - I know I'm in the minority, so just wanted to let you know that honestly, whether you go with one or not, I think everything will be awesome.

I thought i was the only one who didn't like the emcee idea. I feel like they all have the same voice and are really annoying. i wanted a woman to do any announcing but my DJ co had a hard time finding one, and i know they tried. i just think maybe a woman would know how to keep it tacktful and not cheesy.

I'll be making any spanish announcements LOL!!

I had 145 guests, and I signed on for a DJ & MC. Honestly, if I had to do it over, I would not have included an MC, especially since ours didn't do much other than announce us. but like others have said, its probably b/c our crowd didn't really need much motivation. do you think your friends/family will get on the dance floor on their own? if you do, I'd prob. skip the MC. HTH!

I feel like you need an MC for a wedding. You should check out Bravura Entertainment. They offer MC's that are WONDERFUL! They are not over the top (in fact, when you fill out your final sheet, they ask you how involved you want the MC to be). An MC for a wedding makes all of the announcements of your formalities and gets you party going. IMO...it's necessary!

I chose the MC + DJ because the price was great for both IMO. Sure it was less with just the one guy but for both it was within our budget
