Can't decide between them. How many here are using a dj vs. a band? What are your reasons for using a band if so?

I am using a D.J. Before I knew about the price difference, I could never decide which I would rather. The price difference is huge! I decided on the D.J. because I like the way my favorite songs sound by the original artists. Bands are great, but I prefer a D.J.

They both have their benefits and so on, but personally I wanted a band. If you get quality though, both can be excellent.

Re: dj or band??
I prefer DJ's. Bands can be limited and they can be risky. A DJ just has to play the songs that someone else has already sung in a good order. A band has to sing the songs well and put the songs in a good order. IMO unless you are going to spend a lot on a band, it's too risky. Plus, what happens if the band breaks up? Then the band that you saw and booked is not the exact one you're getting.

Re: dj or band??
I went with a band my family did not want a DJ. FH thought dj's were for sweet sixteens. I do not agree with him but you have to look at the style wedding you are having, the sound you wish to have, the songs you want. I have been to great weddings that had DJ's and great weddings that had bands. I have also been to ones that were horrible. There is an element of unpredictability with both. If your dj can be limited in their selections they can play songs you specifically requested them not to play. BUT this can easily happen with a band. I would go to a showcase where they have a dj play and check out if that is what you are looking for. Then go to a few showcases and decide which sound you really prefer. We went with Times Square Orchestra Etd to say - True that bands can break up or change members but I know incidents of people ending up with a different dj who did not have their play list - so to me it is more about your desired sound

Re: dj or band??
I am using DJ, I guess it depends on your budget and the size of the party. We are trying to keep everything within a budget, so we decided DJ, plus we are having only about 50-60 guests, so a band will be to big even if we had the money for it.

If you can afford a good band, do it. If not a dj is great too.

Re: dj or band??
I am going to have a DJ mostly because of the price difference. Even if I was willing to spend the extra $ for a band, I'm not sure that I would want a band. Anyway, it's one less decision that I have to make because I've decided that this is one of the places that I am willing to sacrifice to save money. I also like hearing the songs by the original artist.

Re: dj or band??
Your band members should never take a break all at once. During dinner, someone should always be playing the keyboard or whatever. Get that written in your contract!!

Re: dj or band??
we had a band - DH insisted on it and I'm glad we went that way. Our band never took breaks all together - there was live music all night long. I think having a band adds to the ambiance, but there is a substantial price difference. We paid about $5k for a 9 piece band. They were incredible.
My father was against the band idea, being a big fan of DJs, but our band won him over.

Re: dj or band??
well, I didnt mean breaks from music, just that a dj...there is always music. I feel it is nicer to hear a song from the original artist.
I couldnt see paying all that $$$ for a band. I would have used that extra $$$ for something else.
