I am OVER PAYING
No you aren't..... look what you are getting! I work for a DJ and when I see someone post that they got a DJ for $750, that scares me, especially when they don't tell you what they got. It makes people like you feel like they got ripped off.
I will say that DJ prices really have a big range, but don't feel like you are overpaying.
Remember, and I don't say this because I work for one, but your entertainment is THE MOST important part of your reception. Yes the food and the flowers are nice, but people don't remember that the next day, week, year.
It's the fun they had, provided by the entertainment, whether it's a dJ or a band.
And as far as applying the difference to an extra photographer.......what would the photographer have to shoot if the entertainment wasn't great enough to get people dancing?
Food for thought......

Re: dj prices
what is average $$ for a dj and mc for ceremony and reception? I heard someone on here saying that if they could change something about there wedding (past), they would not have paid for music during the cocktail hour... does this seem to be a waste??

IMO I really like music at a cocktail hour. You don't really notice it, but you do if it's not there. It adds a nice touch, and when guests are arriving, it's nice for them to feel 'welcomed' with the music. Make it instrumental so not to compete with guests conversation.
