what does the dj do when the cocktail hour is a different room from the reception part.. do they have equipment for both rooms?

They use a smaller system usually separate from the equipment in the reception room.

All DJs should bring 2 systems - whether they are doing cocktail hour & reception or reception only - just in case of equipment problems
If anyone isn't sure whether their dj does this or not, definitely ask them!
