Dj question

What did you look for in DJ? What's a reasonable price range? What sort of music are people even expecting at weddings? I ask because between myself and FH we could just put a stereo in the middle of the room and play a mixed tape of Modest Mouse and country music and be happy as pigs in mud.

Re: Dj question

We wanted a one man DJ/MC because I can't stand when DJs are in your face and trying to drag guests to dance. We saw one of our house vendors at a showcase, and FH looked at me 30 seconds in and was like ***? did I step into the Jersey Shore? I'd hit this guy if we booked him. So needless to say, it made us realize what we wanted pretty fast.

We booked Phil from After Hours. He's great! He has amazing energy, but understands that we don't want fist pumping and in your face attitude. Phil was also wonderful when we explained to him that due to medical conditions (FMIL is prone to seizures & my mother & I are prone to migraines) we couldn't have any flashing lights. Prices were great and we even ended up doing a steel drummer for the cocktail hour

We don't listen to a a lot of mainstream stuff, so we've made up a list of songs. It's mostly rock and reggae. Our friends will like it and be up dancing.... Not so sure about the old folks though

Sorry so long! HTH!

Re: Dj question

I met with 4 DJ companies (Tommys Tunes, After Hours, LI Sound, Absolute.) If I remember correctly, for an MC and DJ for a 4 hour reception + cocktail hour, they all ran about $1500.00 (It made choosing a company pretty hard, because there was no major difference in pricing.)

Thanks for your help, ladies!

FH and I are not big dancers at all, so we definitely wouldn't be interested in an in-your-face Jersey Shore type of DJ. We got our RH booked and I think we're onto Church -> Florist -> DJ for the next round of giving some people all of our money.

Re: Dj question

My FH & I are so similar to you and yours! We wanted to hear our misc, screw the rest, no fist pumping or light shows - got after hours, phil was great and understood i wanted just music and basically no announcements. he gave us $900 for 4 hours of dj at reception, ceremony & cocktail hour music on cd. made me feel a lot better about having a dj, not an ipod playlist like we wanted
