DJs and prices.....

DJs and prices.....

OK.... my plans fell through to get up to LI to check out some DJ's (MD SUCKS when it comes to snow - the roads are STILL crappy). I don't know WHEN I can get back up there and I'm still starting to get stressed because we haven't yet booked our DJ or photog.

I know I want the peace of mind knowing that my DJ will be great/reliable/experienced, etc. I can't just go to a showcase because I'm living OOT, so I'm more relying on good reviews from other brides.

What should I expect to pay for a DJ with an MC and lights? I don't want gimmicks, giveaways or props.
I guess we'll need lights because the reception will be held in the hotel ballroom - and there are no windows.

Sorry that this question is so redundant, but I haven't really seen PRICES posted along with reviews. I'd like to get an idea before talking with specific vendors.

Ladies, thank you so much for your advice/input and I hope I can repay the favor some day.

We're using Starlight Express. I've heard nothing but good things about them (though if there are any bad opinions out there or words of caution, feel free to let me know). We're using them for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception for about $1795. I believe their light show was quoted to us somwhere between $600-700 but we opted not to do it (though I'm rethinking that since it might not be as inviting to dance if it's just dimmed ballroom lights).

Ralph from Hi-Energy 5 hours and ceremony, some giveaways and basic light package for $1100.

I decided not to get the lights or the giveaways and am paying $1000.

Hi,
I'm paying about $1400-1500 (don't have paperwork here sorry) for dj & mc, hour of cocktail music (no fancy instruments, just music playing) plus they threw in some extra lights. Get in Tune, Ronkonkoma, they are listed on this site.

We are using the same DJ, about the same price, and have heard good things about Get in Tune

You can go anywhere from $700- $2000 depending on who you use. I'm planning the wedding from DC and what I've found to be the most helpful is to do searches on the all the boards for DJ's. Once you get a list together of the most 'notorious' of the lot, do another search on the bride's review for how happy/unhappy the brides were.

I went with Vinny from High Voltage as did a lot of people because he had a nice mix of what I was looking for, plus he offered great services for less money. Tommy Tunes and Music by Michael are also nice. You could possibly even call them to get quotes over the phone. If you have any problems and need info on any three, fm me, I went looking the second weekend in January so hopefully I have the most update info. Good luck!
