I never had back problems until this year when I did something to my back and couldn't walk for a week. I went to a Chiropractor who helped but I didn't agree with his diagnosis. I am now going on my third week of having lower back pain to the point that I am popping 3 motrins every 6 hours. I am going to make an appointment but I thought I should see an orthopedic who can prescribe more diagonistic tools then a chiropractor... What do you girls do?

Re: Do I go to a Chiropractor or an Orthopedic?
what about going to the er or a walk in clinic and asking them? my younger brother had a severe back ache, he lifted something the wrong way at work. he went to a first care clinic and they send him to a orthopedist. also, try streching your back out, that may help

Re: Do I go to a Chiropractor or an Orthopedic?
Where are you located? I know a really good chiropractor in Hewlett. He helped me out after my car accident 5 years ago.....
I also went to an Orthopedic doctor and I found he did nothing for me.....
The stretching, the massages and the cracking that I got at the Chirpractor really helped out.

I'm located in Huntington. I am just worried that I tore something last year and it hasn't heeled right. I just find it strange that I went from never having back problems to being unable to walk or sit up straight.

I say Ortho first. A good ortho doctor will refer to you a chriopractor if it's minor enough, but if it's something major I would like a real doctor of medicine to see me first.
Your choice

I have back problems, and saw an ortho in Huntington, and then I went to physical therapy. (I have hernaited discs in my back). I don't have his number on me, but if you would like his info. FM me and I'll look it up for you.

My chiro is in Hewlett, and I am guessing that is too far from you.
I would suggest getting Therma Pads....You can get them at any CVS or Eckards. All you do is apply the pad to the area that hurts, and leave it there for 8 hours...the pad will heat up and the heat tends to make the pain go away...Always works for me

if you have a herniated disc i would go straight for an mri -- prob. thru an orthopedist. if it's bad then you have to see a neursurgeon but an mri can really tell you what's going on in there esp. if you are in alot of pain.
they may just send you for PT too
i have had back problems and 2 huge herniated discs so i don't fool around w/ the chiropractor anymore b/c i am scared w/ the cracking but that's me.

Re: Do I go to a Chiropractor or an Orthopedic?
A reputable Chiro will do x-rays to see if there is any structural damage before doing an adjustment. I think Ortho docs are good for broken bones, but my Chiro was my savior during my worst pain. JMO.

Yes I agree. My chiro did X rays....I ended up having Whip last, one herniated disc in my neck, and two in my back Scott

A chiropractor can prescribe xrays and MRI's, etc etc.
I think you should go to both...an orthopediest to check out what's really going on, and a chiropractor for treatment

Thanks everyone for all your help. I made an appointment with an orthopedic so hopefully it is nothing too bad.

Re: Do I go to a Chiropractor or an Orthopedic?
I also want to add that I have severe back problems, I have lumbar herated discs, cervical disc space narrowing and striaghtening, and I have scoliosis.. and the chiropractor has helped me a GREAT deal..hopefully what you have is nothing serious...but even if it is, a chriropractor can still help you.
Also, for those who are afraid of cracking, there are several different methods and schools of chiropractic. My chiropractor uses the 'activator methid' which uses a little took called an activator to do the adjustment.. it's just little quick very precise adjustments, and you feel no pain and there's no cracking. I know with the traditional method, it's sometimes such a huge adjustment that it sets something else out of whack..with activator, it's all very precise and concentrated. Also, there's another kind of chiroprator who only adjusts your atlas (I think this is the top of your neck only), so there's a lot of stuff, and I can give you #'s if you want. I just honestly feel like chiropractic has done so much for me, with my backk, allergies, TMJ, that i think everyone should go!

Re: Do I go to a Chiropractor or an Orthopedic?
My chiropractor in Huntington has a Physical Therapist in his office that I see for back pain from a prior car accident. He is wonderful. If you want more info FM me.
I have seen him on & off for different problems over the years. He is also my nutritionist.

That's what I'm talking about...BTW-MDs hate Chiropractors. They don't consider them in ttheir league. My regular doc knows I go but isn't happy about it. I'm happy and pain free. Re: Do I go to a Chiropractor or an Orthopedic?
I feel for you.
I never had back problems either until 3 weeks ago.....I woke up one morning and couldn't move for a week. I went to the emergency room and they told me that I pulled my sciatica nerve. (starts in your lower back and sends a sharp pain through your right hip and down your right leg).
They gave me pain killers and told me it would go away on its own. I still have it and my doctor now recommended I go to physical therapy.
The pain isn't as sharp but its still there. I've been taking motrine as well. I hope it goes away soon.

I agree with the above comment. You really should be seeing a neurosurgeon or neurologist when dealing with your back you have too much going on there to see just a orthopedist.

Re: Do I go to a Chiropractor or an Orthopedic?
Wow 'Scoop'.. thats what I think I have too! I've had it for a month but now it seems to be going down both my legs.. The dr tried to get a MRI but my insurance co denied it Dr seems to think that it either a herniated disc or a pinched nerve
Maybe I should ask the dr about Physical Therapy... did u start yet?

Re: Do I go to a Chiropractor or an Orthopedic?
I was in bed for many many weeks with sciatica. I went for PT and amillion treatments...and it wasn't getting better, then I stopped the treatments and it went away on tis own. I think the PT was overdoing it. You need light stretching, massage, chiro, etc. I've also found that acupuncture helped me a LOT with the pain
