Should I spend the money on a professional videographer or can I just have someone in my family use a regular videocamera to capture the day? I'm not into a cheesy video - I just want to have the ceremony and first dance on tape. Any advice?

Re: Do I Need a Videographer?
IMO, you gonna want to see the whole day unfold...
pictures tells a story but a video will capture everything, including stuff you may never see about your wedding granted you will not watch it everyday, a couple times a year, speical anniversary parties, etc.. its nice to look back and hear what was side
and even if you don't have $$$$$, you can spend $ and still have good footage and a good edit.

Agree - The day goes by sooooooooooooooo fast! I know the day for me was such a blur, there are a few very key moments that are as clear as day, but I want to SEE my wedding and experience everything. I think video is worth spending the $$ on. If it's a matter for $$ and budget, cut out something else, or scale other things down. It's sooooo worth it. (we get ours tomorrow, and I'm soooooo excited to see it!)

I would want one...Ok...let me rephrase that...I did want one. No matter who does it make sure it's on tape. That day your head will be in the clouds. I swear...half the ceremony I just giggled and gazed into DH's eyes... I can't wait to see the video just to see what actually happened during the ceremony.
So...I guess what I'm saying...no matter who does it...get someone whether professional or family to video tape it.
HTH.

Re: Do I Need a Videographer?
I'm really glad we got one. The day went by so fast and there were a lot of things that I didn't see, like my bridesmaids walking down the aisle, etc. Plus it was fun showing it to some of my relatives who couldn't make it to the wedding.
I'm glad we got a professional photographer to do it because I would feel bad if a relative does it and he misses stuff, but then you can't complain to him. If it's a pro, his job is to make sure he gets everything. I highly recommend the one we got: Bliss Productions. They're really nice and their stuff is not cheesy at all.

Not all videographers are cheesy. I would never pay for a cheesy video with animations etc.

Re: Do I Need a Videographer?
I know a few people that didn't get the videographer who regreted it. I am so happy we got it.
There are just things in video that you will never see as the day goes by.
Imagine my horror and laughter at my uncle taking a swipe at my wedding cake, licking his finger and then taking another swipe at it! You can't make this stuff up!

I'm really glad we got a videographer. There were so many great moments that we caught on tape. If I had a family member take the video, I'd worry that they'd miss something. The family member probably wants to enjoy the wedding and may not want to videotape much of it. IMO, a videographer is worth the $.

Re: Do I Need a Videographer?
IMO if you want somebody to capture your day do not let someone do it with regular equipment hire the videographer. If you are planning on putting the responsibility on a guest or family member that is a huge pressure and the quality will not compare. If you don't want a cheesy video with sound effects and animations talk to your videoagrapher tell them exactly what you want. The quality would be much better because they have the correct equipment, a video shot by one of your guests when they want and the shots they want will not compare.

Basically, I can tell you that yes, it's beyond important. It's not something that you can do over, so why take your chances? But read and make up your mind for yourself.
P.S. 9 times out of 10 someone who didn't get video will regret making that choice...but those that did get it don't regret it. Hope that makes sense.

I will tell you, we didn't want one, but once we saw one form a videographer that was unobtrusive..we were convinced, it wouldn't hurt to check them out...here is our guy, his name is Steve he is a LIW vendor from Clasic Video Productions, and he works out of his home...amazing HTH

Re: Do I Need a Videographer?
we had my best friends dad do it... just basically the ceremony and importand stuff at the reception ( dance, cake cutting, toast). now, you hvae to know him... i think hes an adult with ADD- LOL- he LOVES doing things like this, and i think he would have been bored otherwise, so i don't feel like we made him miss anything.... he did a great job and went above and beyond- came to the rehearsal to figure out where to stand during the ceremony, gave us two 'modes' of the DVD ( don't ask me... i have no idea)... he put scene selection on there, too so you can watch just the ceremony or just the reception... we gave him a gift card for a really nice restaurant...
so yeah, i think you do need video, because it really does capture the day like nothing else.... but i think if you know the right person, like we did, you can find somebody in your family or a friend to do it

Re: Do I Need a Videographer?
without a doubt YES! Cant beat the professionally done videos IMO- and you should each part of the day on tape- one day you will want to show your children and grandchildren... you can find them reasonably priced, they are not all cheesy! It is worth it in the end

Re: Do I Need a Videographer?
definitely get one! they're not all expensive and cheesy
mine's only $1050 for 5 fully edited DVDs with baby pictures and recap. totally worth it. and the guy pete is a doll.
i think it depends on what is most impt to you for your wedding...IMO, photog and video are right up there with making sure I look perfect so this is something that I edefinitely want and am willing to spend $$$ on to make sure it is excatly how I want it...but if it is not a big deal to you then I would say as long as you have someone getting everything you will not be missing it all...JMO!

Re: Do I Need a Videographer?
If you do get a videographer, please choose your vendor wisely.
Although we have a video, it causes more pain than it brings happy memories. When my friends and family watched our video, the discussion centered around what a bad job the company I used did, instead of how nice our day was.
Ironically, the company plastered their name across the screen at the beginning and end of the video, so everyone who watched it knows which awful company dropped the camera in the middle of our ring exchange, among other problems!

I agree- I did not have a pro- with the newer cameras, if you have someone willing to be patient, you can get almost pro coverage. We had my DVD camcorder that my mom's friend used to tape the ceremony and it came out perfect. Other friends used their camera to tape all the highlights of the reception and it was awesome. You really do relive the day. But you don't have to go pro to get that coverage. I felt we have a ton of tape to watch.
On the flip side my friend had no one to tape but I brought my camera for fun. SHe was SOOO excited to see the ceremony and reception and her 90 year old grandma was too sick to come so she got to see it too. Make sure to get a couple of people to tape in case one gets sick or backs out.

Re: Do I Need a Videographer?
Have you gone to see any videographers? If you haven't, maybe you should... make up your mind afterwards. It might not be what you think.
In the beginning, I wasn't so into having a videographer, I've seen some really cheesy videos... but I went to check out some videographers anyways... totally changed my mind. Now I'm looking forward to viewing my wedding video.
