I guess you don't have to, but I would recommend it. I found a doctor that I loved, and thankfully he was also a participating doctor at the hospital I delivered at, so he came to see Jake when he was born to check him out.
If you don't have a pediatrician picked out, the hospital will recommend some to you. Just remember to have one picked out by the time you come home from the hospital because the baby will have to go see them within a week from comming home from the hospital for a check up.

what are are you located in?

Yes, you should have a pediatrician picked before you deliver. If there are any complications with the baby, the pediatrician you choose would likely participate in the decisions being made. My pediatrician also requires a first checkup within 48 hours of when we check out of the hospital.

Your baby will have to be seen by a pediatrician before leaving the hospital. So, it's good (but not necessary) - if the one you choose is on staff at your delivering hospital. It's nice when you go for that first office visit a week or so later and you have already met them at the hospital. I got mine because my ob takes his kids there, and I thought that was a good recommendation. If your ped. is not affiliated with the hospital, no big deal, you will just be seen by one of the house staff before you go home. Good luck!

The pediatrician that I chose for my son came in the morning after Alex was born (he was born at night) and congratulated me and examined Alex. I had a ton of questions for him that I came up with through the night. He made me feel soo much better.

I think he was there the three days I was at the hospital-- If i remember correctly.

I will be delivering at Winthrop so if they recommended one for me, that would be great. Or if anyone knows of one in Mineol/Garden City??? I guess I can also ask my ob/gyn for a recommendation since I'm sure they get that question often! I just want a pretty big practice where I can get it to see a doctor on short notice....

Unless someone you know recommends a pediatrician I would ask your OB/GYN.
My doctor gave me a 5 page list of pediatricians, who I believe are affilated with Winthrop. I think they are pretty used to being asked that question.
I opted to use someone not affliated with Winthrop because of a family recommendation. In my case I will have the baby looked at by a pediatrician on call at Winthrop, then I have to take the baby with in 48 hours to the doctor I chose.

My son was seen by the pediatrician they have on call in the hospital, after that I brought him to the one of my choice, since she wasn't affiliated with that hospital.

When filling out our pre-admission paperwork at about 4 months preggo, I had to choose who I wanted to see the baby in the hospital. There were two groups of Pediatricians that were affiliated with the hospital, and as it turned out they both came recommended so I just chose one of them.

He was there when DS was born in the delivery room by C/S and they came every morning to see him in the nursery. He also had to be seen before we were discharged. They seemed great so I stuck with them.

I also need a recommendation for a pediatrician that is from the same area. If anyone knows of one please let me know!

I had one picked out (based on family and friends who I trusted reco) but had never called since my baby came early. It wasn't a big deal at all because they weren't affiliated with my hospital anyway. If the pediatrician isn't affiliated with the hospital - then the pediatricians on staff will take care of your baby. When I left the hospital, they gave me copies of his records for my dr.

If you are unsure who you are going to use, definitely set up interviews in advance because you will need to make a dr appt for the first week baby is home.
