Do I REALLY have to throw that boo-k?

Do I REALLY have to throw that boo-k?

It may seem like a hoot at some weddings, but honestly, most of my single girlfriends are like are tired of appearing as if they would KILL to catch that boo-K and be thought of as the next one whose 'turn' it is to get married!

Are there ANY fun alternatives to this practice?

I just heard about a break apart boo-k. You set it up with florist that it's a bunch of roses or whatever, not bound, but looks loke a boo-k.

You ask ALL the women to come to dancefloor and then toss as if it's a real boo-k but it breaks apart and lots of women get a flower.

Sounds kinda cool, but I haven't actually seen it.

At my friends they did this thing where they got all the women on the floor. Then the dj counted down starting off with 'one stay on the floor if you are engaged' then'only stay on the floor if you are getting married one year from now' 'six months from now' 'next week'
It was so cute cause there were so many of us engaged. and there really was one girl that was getting married the next weekend. Then my friend threw the bouquet to her.

The other one that I saw was a limbo and the bride just kept letting the litter girl go under the bar, even when she fell, so she would get the bouquet.

We didn't do any tosses and didn't throw something in to take it's place - just more dancing

It's your wedding .. do what you want.

We did the anniversary game .. so the longest married couple would be honored .. however .. the real longest married couple chose not to participate in the game .. I found out much later that my aunt and uncle had actually been married longer than the couple who got the bouquet .. but the game was fun anyway .. and everyone seemed to enjoy it .. the floor was packed .. when we started out, that is.

We did the anniversary dance, which is what LadyPrincess was talking about. You end up giving the bouquet and garter to the couple who has been married the longest. It's nice because it usually ends up that you honor a set of grandparents. DH's paternal grandparents had been married the longest - 57 years. We also gave them a bottle of champagne. THe pics loked so cute - Grandpa put the garter on his arm!

I always HATED when the bride threw the bok....it was always followed with tons of 'friends' shoving me onto the dance floor to proudly announce that I was nearing 30 and I was 'still single' not only that but then I was supposed to tackle other single women desperataly trying to catch the cheap flowers in hopes of grasping onto some mystical magical powers that meant I was to soon find the man I would marry.

I found him and NEVER caught a bok -- because even though I was forced onto the floor, I never even tried to catch it...I always left it for the women who found this tradition amusing.

We chose to go with the anniversary dance...when you count up the years a couple is married. I found it much classier to 'award' a couple for lasting in a relationship than I did to pity one who couldn't find one! It went over really well and my DH grandparents went home with a beautiful bok of flowers and felt special that they were recognized for their hearwarming love for one another!

I'm anti BO-K toss - at least in the traditional sense.

I am doing at the church. I thought it would be a really nice picture to have everyone (men, woman, old, young) that comes to the church stand at the bottom of the stairs and look up as I toss the bo-k down.

It's an amazing picture and gets everyone involved!!!

Just an idea!

I agree and I'm not doing it either. There would be 4 ladies up there and that would look ridiculous.

My cousin did the 'anniversary dance' where you have all the married couples dance and they get asked to sit down if they've been marrie less than....
In the end the couple married the longest gets the bo-K. I think that's sweet.
I'm not doing the garter toss either. Just don't care to have all these people watch as my husband goes up my skirt...

We're not doing the bo-k toss or garter toss. I think it takes too much time.

We're going to do the anniversary dance and we're not doing a garter toss.

We didn't do any tosses. However, because I knew my sister really expected to get the Boo-K, I made sure that while I was taking portrait shots before the ceremony, the photographer got a couple of shots of me handing the Boo-K to my sis - then at the end of the night, it went home with her.

P.S. I later learned she threw it out. You can't choose your family.

Re: Do I REALLY have to throw that boo-k?

We did the anniversary dance and the couple was married 47 years.
We put a different spin on it though.....DH first took the garter off of me. We did the anniversary dance AND THEN.....I presented the throw away b-ok and DH gave him the garter. BUT we then had that couple (married 47 years) but the garter on his wife. I wanted something different and I thought it would be a lot of fun!!! Everyone thought it was a GREAT idea. The married couple thought it was so nice for a change to honor the longest married couple. We got some cute pictures. The DJ loved our idea and how it worked out. He said he plans on using it in the future.

We did the same thing too but my DH gave a thank you speech to my parents for all their help and I presented my mom with a small boo-k and my dad with a garter.

We didn't throw the bo-k either -
nor did we put anything in place.

At my brothers wedding they handed the bo-k off and dedicated a dance - to the next person getting married - which was me.

This is what we plan on doing. I too absolutely hated the bo-k toss.

Ugh... at 34 years of age I think the bo-kay toss is a barbaric practice We are an older couple... the only females not-married that are invited to my wedding are a 40 something year old common-law wife and my FH's nieces (all under ten years old). Waaaaaaay before I knew FH I decided I was not doing this at the wedding. It's humiliating, especially if you have several single female guests who are single through no fault of their own. And demeans the single status of women. I beg you as a 'former single female guest at many a wedding' please don't do it. The anniversary dance is so much nicer and accentuates the positive.
