I had a meeting with a GREAT baker and I'd love for him to make our wedding cake. He's a bit pricey though and I'm concerned that, at the end of the night, people might not be into eating the cake.
Soooo... my question is whether it's worth it to get his well-known guy to make our cake (it was the BEST we've had) or if we should just save the $$$ since people won't eat it anyway? Thanks!!

Re: Do people really eat the cake? POLL
I always eat the cake and I always make sure the people at my table do too! I heard once that it's good luck for the and if you eat the cake. Probably was someone who was cheating on their diet who made that one up!

I ALWAYS eat the cake and if it's good and someone at my table happend to be in the bathroom, dancing, smoking, etc, I'll STEAL and EAT theirs. Yum yum yum yum yum.
Edited to say: You could probably go with the 110 person cake

Jenn, have you heard bad things about the Glen Island cake? Should I look into having one made?

No, not at all! The one downside though is that they don't offer a cake tasting, so it's hard to know exactly what it's going to be like. I've heard good things about it though from a co-worker who got married there this fall. I just have a very specific style of cake in mind and very specific flavors too. I may call GIHC to find out if they can do what I want before I go with this other baker.

Personally, I am not a cake eater, so I couldn't care less. However, some people are, so it's really up to you if you want to spend the $$$
Can you try your caterer's cake and see if you really like it? Maybe you can give them the specifications and they can duplicate it.

Re: Do people really eat the cake? POLL
I would say that about half of our guests ate the cake. The other half all commented on how delicious it was. I don't even remember what it tasted like.
We had a cake for about 80 people then, to save money, we had a sheet cake in the kitchen that fed 100. No one knew the difference. It was the same cake, icing and filling but, it did save us a lot!

I worked at a catering hall for 3 years and mainly worked weddings and yes people do eat the cake. I would say 80% of people ate the cake or tasted it. Also some people even asked for more if there was extra. Go for it. What will it look like? I bet it will be fabulous!

Thanks Kimberly! It's going to be a 3-tier cake. We're still working out the exact details, but one version is to have the top 2 tiers look like Tiffany boxes, ribbon and all, so with fondant icing. The bottom tier would be buttercream and covered with pink sugar roses so that it looks like the Tiffany boxes are sitting on a bed of pink roses. For flavors, I want either almond or vanilla cake with pistachio and mocha filling or pistachio and hazlenut. Mmmm!!

I have a sweet tooth so I am the wrong person to ask. I am so happy that our hall's cakes taste good. To me that matters more than what they look like

YES, people really eat the cake. FH's favorite part of attending a wedding is getting to eat wedding cake.
If you have the extra money, and really love the cake, then I say go for it!

I think its worth it because a lot of people look forward to the cake, and it also gives people a chance to sit down from dancing. Who in their right mind would say no to a piece of cake?!
