Do people still give Savings Bonds as gifts?

Our niece is being christened this weekend. We don't want to give cash so we were thinking of a savings bond. I know when I casehd mine in a few years back, the return on them wasn't that great. So do people still give them? Can anyone suggest something else better?

TIA!

We always give savings bonds as gifts for christenings/baptisims. I think they are perfect!

Yep, us too. My savings bonds paid for a portion of our wedding.

We do and my niece and nephew both got a ton when they were born/baptised! I think they are GREAT gifts! And we just started giving them for birthdays and holidays for our neices and nephews because they have too many toys and too many clothes we decided to get them a small gift and then give them savings bonds as well! It will be a great help 18 years from now when college at a state school costs 80K a year!

I definitely do. I just bought my brother and cousin a savings bond for their communion.

I cashed in all the bonds I received throughout my life after college and bought a computer.

You can buy them at any bank, that's where I get mine, I have a Citibank in my office building.
