Do videographers and photogs charge tax andgratuity?

I haven't booked our photographer yet, but all of them I've met with charged tax. One said they'd waive the tax if we paid with cash. I'm pretty sure the gratuity is up to you to pay them the day of the wedding. Definitely ask them if you get any special discounts like no tax if you pay in cash- it can't hurt to ask, right?!

FYI - this should not be brought up on here AT ALL.

The IRS was watching the boards about this very subject not too long ago, and they probably still do.

It is against the law for certain vendors to not charge sales tax just because you pay in cash.

Thanks for the tip! I had no idea, but it makes sense that they would be looking for something like that.

I believe if you propose to pay in cash, you can save on the tax.

yes tax is charged, but thankfully vendors have been including the tax in their quotes to us so we didn't have to do extra calculations.

Gratuity is up to you.

Photographers and other service vendors are actually not allowed to charge taxes on SERVICES they provide--although they must charge taxes on the goods they provide. It is illegal if they do not follow this.

(This is something we were told by our music/band.)

This was actually an 'issue' that saved us some money by speaking up...when we selected our photographer, she wanted to charge us tax. I asked the question regarding tax on services-- she checked with her accountant, and said this was correct.
For us not to pay tax on the service, we had 2 seperate bills-- one for the 'service' and one for the 'goods' (proofs, etc).

This saved us a nice piece of change....! I would DEF speak up and save yourselves some money.
