I had one DJ describe it to me this way:
33% of the guests will dance on their own 33% wont dance at all...
but there are 33% of the people who will need a bit of help - the MC is there to get them out on the floor.

i went to a wedding that didn't have an MC and it was rough. The music was playing, but people were just confused as to whether or not they were supposed to get up and dance or just stay seated.

I think it depends upon the wedding and the crowd.
I think the larger it is and the later it is the more you need an mc.
I'm having my dj make a minimum number of announcements.
Trust me... my guests will know when to dance because I will tell them!!!
I'm not planning to get off of the floor

I have to agree with this. My DJ told me he would not hard-sell me on an MC at all, that the decision was mine. To me, the MC is insurance. About 1/3 of my crowd will dance on their own, but the MC (to me) is going to insure that more people have a good time.

ABSOLUTELY get an MC. It livens up the crowd and gets people going. Takes less stress off of you if nobody is dancing- that's his job! Trust me... if you want a good one go to Tommy Tunes and ask for Joe C. He did the actress on the Sopranos wedding in real life. I've been to about 4 weddings with him and he is amazing. My FH brother had him, his other brother will have him in July and we booked him too. I'm telling you... it's worth the extra cash!

not only is a mc good with the ppl, it will also be less on him to say what he needs to say and spin music at the same time
we had an option of a dancer person but we opted out...

I don't plan on having an mc - and it's just a personal opinion. I've seen too many mc's take the spotlight and turn it into their event - when that shouldn't be the focus. JMO!
I do, however, agree with the other ladies who say that an mc makes it livelier. My most recent wedding experience last week had an amazingly obnixious mc who insisted on signing along with every song - maybe that's clouding my vision right now...

that's what fh is afraid about and i've seen some mc's really piss off the crowd because they are loud and obnoxious..a dj will do the announcements right? or are my guests going to be lost??? i'm confused

A good MC will NOT be obnoxious and rude. Go to bridal showcases and see them in action. That's what I did and chose Tommys Tunes with Joe E. as the MC.

I didn't want an MC at first and didn't think we really needed one. My mind has since changed and I booked an MC. I think he would keep things moving along other than that you would have a dj just playing music.
I see what you are guyns are saying though about MC's being obnoxious and stealing the show. I hope that doesn't happen to me.
