First, I'm sorry for not putting this on the NWR board, but it hasn't started to pick up yet and I need lots of opinions on this. I got a call today from our landlord who wants to raise our rent by $35 if we renew our lease. Not a lot of money, right? BUT it means that we're paying $1605/month to rent a 1 bedroom apartment including the $55/month fee for a parking space. For some reason, as long as it was under $1600, it bothered me, but not enough to move. Is this too much? Could we get something nicer or bigger in Nassau for the same price?
Here's what we have right now. We have an approximately 950 sq foot 1 bedroom in a well-maintained co-op. The livingroom is very large, 18.5' x 13'; the dining area is 7 x 8; the kitchen is a pass through galley kitchen with a dishwasher; the bathroom is sort of small; the bedroom is large 11 x 15.5 and has 2 closets, one small one and one walk in California closet deal; we have 1 hallway closet for storage (seriously lacking) and 1 linen closet.
The benefits are that we can have our 3 cats here, it's only 1/2 mile from FH's office and it's walking distance to LIRR for me when I start commuting to NYC every day--it's also a maximum of 40 minutes to Penn, which is a priority. It's also in a very safe area and we have video surveillance as well. The downside is that we're paying $1600 for a 1 bedroom in Long Island and I park 1/2 block from the building, we don't have a backyard, patio or deck. I would also prefer something with a washer/dryer in the apartment and with a 2nd bedroom or office.
Sorry for the length, but we need to figure out soon whether we should renew our lease or take our chances. Thanks!!!

That is alot of money. That is a mortgage. It sounds like you live where my friends have a coop. Where is this place? I understand that you want to be near the train and FH's office, but you can find something bigger and much cheaper than that.

I think its too much too.... We pay $1025 ( heat included) for a large one bedroom in Lindenhurst....4 blocks from the train station and next to Sunrise Highway...we live on a quiet dead-end block, and have 3 cats... We have a full dining room, an eat in kitchen and large bathroom...moderate sized bedroom...We have tons of storage etc...
I wouldnt pay even in nassau more then $1400 for a one bedroom, with some time and some looking you would be able to find something better, Im positive of that...
ETA: forgot to mention we are not in a private house, we are in a apt. building...there are 4 in the whole building..

Thank you all so much for responding. I was out at my bar review class all morning, so I couldn't respond to some of your questions.
Our current apartment is in Mineola by the train station. I'm sure that we are paying enough for a mortgage, but we're definitely not looking to buy anything at this point in time since we're not sure whether we plan to stay out here after the wedding or move back to NYC. Once I'm done paying for this wedding, we'll actually have a decent amount of money to pay for a 2 bedroom in NYC if we wanted.
We looked at an apartment in Forest Hills last year, around 69th Avenue? and parking was such an issue. The apartment was really nice though. Is there a name for the area of Forest Hills that is by the train station? Thanks again for your help!

I live near Port Washington, and I have a small one bedroom for $1,025.00 a month (and I know I have a 'good deal' based on what my friends pay). Rent is obscene around here!

Hmm, yeah, parking is annoying here. But to be honest, you learn the good places and times to park so it just becomes part of your routine. If you're near the 71st or 75th Avenue subway stops then you're near the LIRR. 69th is toward Rego park and I think the parking over there is a little more difficult than it is by me (75th Ave). Oh, and for parking, you'd want to be on the North side of Queens Blvd, not the side where Austin Street and the LIRR is. It's all meters and private streets on the South side which makes it MUCH more difficult to park.
