Yeah, the media is all over her...
Honestly, I'm glad b/c it puts attention on the horrible crime and epidemic that is drunk driving- hopefully, people will see how they are not backing down on her and that she is actually doing time in jail and they will, as a result, think twice before driving drunk.
Who knows, this could save some lives-- God knows enough are taken each day-- it's time we start saving some.
Honestly, I disagree... I think all this attention on her is making a mockery of the legal system and the media is making light of the HORRIBLE offense she committed. Driving drunk is no laughing matter - she could have killed someone that night. But instead the media is talking about the gray sweatsuit she was wearing in court today and the fact that she wasn't wearing any makeup!!!!!! I think she should rot in jail for a lot longer than 45 days. This is not her first offense! Ugh, this makes me so mad.
Believe me, the Legal system has in many ways let me down before. The most upsetting and depressing was when they sentenced the person who killed my friend to four months in jail. He killed a 20 year old man and was out in just over 100 days. I've never been more let down in my life and it is something I carry with me- and it is something that haunts me every single day. My friend died and there was little to no justice- and I feel the justice system let him, his family and friends down...
BUT, in this particular case, I have to say I commend the justice system for being so strict with her. In a world where someone like OJ Simpson is able to get away with cold-blooded, pre-meditated murder-- the fact that one of the most well known women in the world got handed down a sentence (and BTW, I agree with you- not long enough-they are NEVER long enough) but at least she did get some time, which surprised me, rather than yet another 'slap on the wrist' like her prior offenses...
Then, when she actually went in to serve I was like 'wow, California- a very liberal state- actually stood their ground, good for them'. Then, when she was able to go home on house arrest I went back to being disappointed in the system-- BUT when that judge not only sent her asss RIGHT back to prison- but upped her sentence to what she was originally supposed to serve-- I saw that and took a big sigh of relief that they are actually showing her- and others- that there are consequences for ones actions-- and furthermore, that just b/c someone is 'Paris Hilton' doesn't mean that they can get away with whatever they want.
I truly believe that if they did not stand their ground with her- that she would have continued to drive under the influence-- further endangering the lives of innocent people on the road.
Now, don't get me wrong, the justice system fails a lot of us-- it failed me in the case of my friend-- but there are times where I can honestly say I feel they have done the right thing-- and in this case, making her go back, was the right thing... I hope they don't make me regret these words by letting her out next week but we'll see.
As for now please don't let this message sound like I think the laws we have for drunk driving are sufficient-- because they most certainly are NOT. When people like the person who killed by friend are allowed to go free after just a few short months- something is wrong. BUT, there are times where I feel we are making some ground-- and the case where the man who decapitated that young flower girl and killing the limo driver received an 18 year to life sentence- now THAT was justice and THAT is how we need to start handling these cases- so that they become less and less rather than more and more.
The media will always make a circus out of things and they will always focus on her 'sweatsuit' rather than what we should really be focusing on-- but we as people have the ability to take things and look at them and form our own feelings-- and when I saw that, it really put the spotlight on the problem that is drunk driving and it showcased how people DO really serve time, especially for repeat offenders... So, the more people who see that, IMHO, the better.
