Do you consider your DH's nieces/nephews yours too?
Original post by michele31
I was curious. When I refer to my husband's nephew or niece in a converstation I say 'Scott's nephew' not OUR nephew. His nephew is 7 and his niece is 4 so I was not in the family when they were born. They just started calling me Auntie Michele a few months ago. Do you all do the same thing?

I never referred to husband's nephews as my nephews, just like he doesn't refer to my nieces/nephew as his. It's sort of sad because my nieces love him - I never got a chance to be close to his nephews (We don't have contact with his brother or sister in law anymore).

I consider them 'ours', but I refer to them when speaking as 'his' so that people will know they are not my brother or sister's children. Why would that matter, you ask?? I have no idea. It just seems to make sense in my head.
I was around when all 4 of them were born, so they've always called me Aunt Jennifer.

DH has 2 nieces and 1 nephew, his one niece is 21 and I usually refer to her as Steve's niece but the 2 little ones I refer as our niece and nephew. I have no idea why they are siblings. The older one calls me Stacey and the 2 little ones call me Aunt Stacey or at least try to
