OMG! I just cannot believe how many people think they should say 'I don't like that' or 'I like XX better than XX' when they ask you 'What are you naming the baby?' I know a lot of people have problems with this so we have a rule 'We have no idea yet' is our answer. I just ran off 5 or 6 names I liked to my parents one day (yes, I am dumb!) and my stepmom complained to my sister that she hates all of the names! And during my 1 second run-down she said 'Yuck' 'That's awful' and 'I guess Adam is not too bad'. ***?

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
I guess you are better off doing the same thing as you did while you were planning the wedding which is saying nothing. Its sad that people would say they hate this name or that name to you. It's not about what 'they like.' Its about what you and Scott like.

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
This is why we don't discuss this with anyone!! What is wrong with people?! We are not telling ANYONE our name choices until it's 'too late'! Hopefully at that point, people will keep their comments to themselves!

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
I had a friend who did not share their name choices with anyone for exactly the reason you're talking about.
I can't believe the comments people make about how I look pg and what names we've chosen and any other topic related to my pregnancy. And you're right they often come from those that are close to us

Ok well my FSIL wants to name her son (when she gets prego) Gunnar/Gunner... I say thats nice but I really dont like the name. It isnt something I would choose for a son of mine but its just my opinion. I keep it to myself... it will be her kid not mine.

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
I don't like my nephew's name either but it's not my kid so it's not my choice. And my stepmom didn't complain complain to me, she said it to my sister BUT still. I am just going to wait until the big day and say 'Meet XX' Sometimes I tell people the boy's name is Lucifer and the girl's name is something like Diamond so it sounds like a porno star name You should see their faces!

Your funny Michele. I agree. Its your kid,not theirs. It makes no difference whether everyone else likes the name. Its what you and Scott like.

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
I think it's different if you actually ask people of their opinions, which we have done. Then, I want an honest answer. But, since we already know we're going to name our baby James or Lila, I don't want to know if someone doesn't like it.
What about belly comments? I've gotten so many of them, I'm sick of it. You're high, you're low, it's a girl/boy, you look big for ___ months!! Alright already! At least I've gotten a lot of 'you look great' comments to make up for the other ones.

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
Niha - What I HATED was when complete strangers would walk up and rub my belly... There my be a baby in there but its still MY body... GET OFF!!!
FSIL would come to see us and she would rub my belly for like 5 minutes without stopping... it took everything I had not to punch her

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
I do NOT like stangers so the first one who touches me will get an ear full. I will put a sign DO NOT TOUCH on me if I have to. Close friends and family is one thing, but a stranger- YUCK. And why do people say 'You look big' Do they think you are blind and cannot see/feel that yes, you are not the same size you were before you got pregnant? I think that is awful and just makes you feel bad! Niha- I have seen you a few times during your pregnancy and I think you look beautiful P.S. I love your name choices! Lila is beautiful. and my little brother is James so I like too.

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
I never had anyone rub my belly. I'm glad. I did have a friend who was pg at the same time and someone said 'Rub your bellies together' and I'm laughing now thinking about it but I probably looked like that episode of Seinfeld where Jerry doesnt want to eat the pizza Poppi made b/c he didnt wash his hands, shaking his head no.
We use to say Luke for a boy and we arent sure for a girl. We werent sure and also one of the names I liked for a girl was Ryan and after a few comments about 'Ryan? For a girl??!?!' I stopped telling people. Everyone liked Luke though. How could you not, it's a very cool name People are weird with their unsolicited opinions. I would never tell someone anything about the name they chose.
applesfla LOL - you should do that!

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
I had a friend who got so sick of that, so when people asked her she gave them a real off the wall name, and stuck by her choice when people said stuff. When her son was born she named him the name she always wanted...Michael
She made a game of it and got a kick out of it!!
edited to add: Elizabeth, I have a nephew named Ryan and a great niece named Rhyan. It's a great name for either sex

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
Sometimes I think people put their foot in their mouth and can be very insensitive to other people's feelings. One of my GF said one of her close friends told her, her breast was huge, hello the woman just had a baby. I do not like people touching on a preggo lady baby unless of course it is ok with her
Niha I think you looked beautiful when I saw you at Papa Joes.
From planning our weddings it should be no surprise that people always think that their opinions on what should happen in our lives are more important that what you want or what you think. I think its up to the parents to choose any name they see fit for a child. People in our society can be so rude.

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
when my MIL was asking about names we told her either Justin Nicholas or Julianna Nicole. She said :oooh I don't like Justin'. So my DH said then you'd better hope its a girl. SHe hasn't complained about the name since then - at least not to me.

Oh, and I don't want ANYONE rubbing my belly until it's REALLY big. I'm too self conscious. I want to be sure what they feel is baby and not just ME!

Re: Do you discuss name choses with people?
Jen, I'm LMAO!!!! You KILL me!!!
As for the names, people are ALWAYS going to have a comment to make, whether it's planning a wedding, naming a baby, picking stuff out, whatever! My motto is to tell them that if they don't like, well you can just go scratch your a$$!!! My aunt and my mother are famous for saying 'ew, what kind of name is that?' -- meanwhile I tell them both 'excuse me, but you had your chance to name your kids and in my opinion, you didn't do such a good job, so too bad'
My choices of names have always been and always will be 'real' Italian names -- my mother is Irish and cringes when I rattle off some of the names I like. I laugh and tell her 'there'll be no Caitlyns from this daughter'!! When I was discussing names at my parent's house, my father didn't want me to name it after him Dominic and so Joe goes 'well it'll be Angelo then' and my mother, who was in the kitchen washing dishes goes 'ugh' and I burst out laughing!!!
Hey, she's lucky Joe doesn't like the other names I picked out like Vito and Carmello and Carlo and Gino!!!!! Can you imagine her reaction then??
Then I have my MIL telling me that Joe's father and grandmother might get mad if I don't do the 'Sicilian' thing and name a boy after the father (big argument when Joe was born, that's why he's Joe and not Robert) -- I told her, I'm sorry, no disrespect to your father Joe, but there is no way on this green earth that I'm naming any child of mine Bartholomew (however the heck you spell it --and no disrespect to anybody out there who is named that) -- if that's the case, I'd do it the Italian way and name him Bartolomeo, but no thank you to that way either!!!!
Listen, pick whatever the heck floats your boat -- it's your body, you're going through the agony, it's your child, your choice! If nobody likes it, go scratch!! pfffftttt to them!!!
