Do you ever worry about revealing too much here?

Do you ever worry about revealing too much here?

I would love to vent away about stuff at work, but I worry that someone I work with would find it. I know that might be a little egocentric of me, but I am paranoid, mainly because my real first name is part of my screen name.

Also, I know someone on the other site I visit a lot (an online journal site) who wrote a long, angry entry about her boss. She'd mentioned the name of her workplace and someone (she never found out who) copied and pasted her entry into an e-mail and sent it to her boss. She ended up losing her job.

Does anyone else worry about this?

Sure, you never want to put too much of yourself out there but it's hard. I feel close to a lot of people and tend not to think about people using things I say to get to me. But I guess that is something we should all think of!

I honestly never thought about it much until you posted this. I don't really talk about my job at all on here and I don't think I reveal too much about my personal life, but I DO have an online journal where I write EVERYTHING and now I'm wondering if I should make my posts private, because of the story you shared. That would be a horrible way to lose a job.

I get worried that DH will take a look at my posts. Once I vented about him, and he just so happened to look the same day at my posts . . . . . well that was a huge fight!

Now, I try not to vent! about him anyways.

I had an online freak following me around so yes I think about it...Thats why I change my screen name about once per year...I dont know why but it makes me feel better.

I do worry, especially recently, about revealing too much here..

I do post a LOT of info about DH and myself.. not really our families.. and DH gets mad at me all the time for doing so He agrees with Tania's DH that I shouldn't be posting as many pictures of us as I do .. and I'm pretty sure that when we have a child down the road, he will probably forbid me to post his/her pic too

Its sad that you have to worry yourself like this, but on a public website where anyone can read the boards (except for OT) you really do not know WHO is lurking

Yikes! I never thought of that. DH teaches at a college and I have actually seen at least one B2B mention that she recently graduated from there. I think I have also mentioned the name of his school too, but I don't think I will again.

lilmrs- that is CREEPY.

I was once stalked by a vendor on here and am very careful sometimes,I will never forget him calling me at home and telling me he read my posts on liweddings. I even went so far as to change my name on here so no one can track me down unless I want to be tracked down.

Wow, how did he get your number!? That's scary! I didn't think people could access the phone numbers--do they give the addresses and #s to all the vendors?

Re: Do you ever worry about revealing too much here?

I had posted something about the place I was looking into about my wedding and another bride called and complained she did not get what i was getting ( even though he told us at the time that all brides get this). and he called and b itched me out, since then I had to change my name on line etc. I told the place and they fired him , but it caused a lot of hassle and DH was so annoyed it happened and I had taste of sour lemons in my mouth from the whole experience. This one man had my phone# from when I looked there, we did not book with them. he had the nerve to look online at what I had posted!

I do and I don't. I can't worry that much because oftne when I've had problems or needed to vent, it's been sucha great support sytem, but I do worry because I had an incident where my FSIL found my online journal, took entires out of contest and sent them to the ENTIRE family as evidence that i was cheating on my FH. Of course I wasn't, but it was really insane, and I felt really violated, but then I mean, you're putting it on the internet, so what are they violating?

Also, when I first got engaged and started this site (back in the dark ages), my cousin was randomly like 'So do you go on that Long Island Weddings site? I'm not a member but my friend is and she tells me when to look for all the DRAMA.' So if she's looking for drama I KNOW she's seen me post..LOL..but also she said in such a way that I kind of had the feeling that she had seen me on here. That's why I took the pic of me and FH out of my profile. I figured if people want to figure out if it's me, at least let them work for it a little. I mean if you look through all my entires you cna pretty much identify me and figure out everything about me, what my FH's nameis, where he and I both work, where we went to school, how oldw e are, where we live..but I don't put it all in one post, so someone would have to be TRYING to figure it all out,

no because I am from OOT

But, I stopped posting on the local board on theknot.com for that reason.

I worry b/c I'm a psycholgist in training and I'm afraid one of my patients will one day find me on here..it hasn't stopped me though! I think that once i'm doing more intense work, like in internship next year, that may change.

Now I know why that board only appears sometimes (apparently only when I am logged in).

Sometimes I will go back and edit my posts when I think I've said too much or given too many identifying details out about my life.

Here is a little story: The son of someone who worked at this college I used to work at wanted to get into some kind of high-level government job (maybe FBI or CIA, who knows...) but supposedly he posted on this drug-themed website either tales of his escapades or something like that, and they used that against him and he didn't get the job. I don't have a similar situation, but you never know if a prospective employer would say 'you bashed your previous boss on this website...' or 'you wrote that you were online all day instead of doing your work...'

IT is scary these days. Hello Big Brother!
Anyway, I wouldn't post things I wouldn't say in front of my family or my boss. (I say anything in front of my fiancee, so that doesn't count.) Computer technology is so advanced that someone somewhere can identify you somehow, so I'd be careful.

I would never in one million years tell anyone here on this board where I work. I am bound by HIPAA's privacy laws used to protect my students. I work in a school/day treatment center. If I talk about where I work and made a reference to one of my students (even by accident) I could lose my job and pay a major fine. I can't even post first and last names of my students next to their work outside of my classroom because we are technically a clinical set-up. You never know what HIPAA officers may be patroling the boards.
