Do you feel like this about 9/11?

Do you feel like this about 9/11?

Do you think that we all should be have the ability to choose where we want to be on September 11th? I know it has effected everyone in very different ways and people have their own opinions on the subject but who feels that we should have the right to say where we want to be on that day?

My husband has to take a track line safety course on September 11th (hes an electrician) and he does not want to because he doesnt feel safe working in the tunnels all day on that day. I personally feel that we are probably the safest on this one day of the year because that is when everyone is truly looking for something. But I do feel that all of our opinions and feelings should be respected on that day. No one should be able to dictate to us how we should feel or where we want to be on September 11th.

Does anyone else feel this way?

you have a good point,
i actually dont seem to worry much about september 11, because i also think people are looking out then...
i seem to worry about things more like the thanksgiving day parade, etc...

I think in order to do that, it would have to be declared a national holiday, like labor day or memorial day. Otherwise, we all have to go to work, school, whatever.

My company was directly effect by 9/11 ( we owned 7 WTC which collapsed also) so they are leaving it up to the managers discretion if employees need to go to work or not. I am not comfortable going in but I'll be there due to the department i work in.

nycchic...I agree with you. I feel like you should be able to choose where you want to be that day. I still cry over that day and I know I am not alone.

Your DH and anyone else for that matter should be able to make a choice as to whether they want to treat that day like any other.

I'll be working that day, but I'm sure that it's going to be a pretty lax day, i.e., no one's going to be expecting anyone to get much work done if they don't feel like it. My only problem is that one of my adversaries adjourned a case for trial on that day, and I really don't want to be dealing with a trial that day. I know my supervisor doesn't want to be in court that day either, and most other attorneys were adjourning cases for the day before and the day after. This guy just wanted to give me a hard time because he didn't want to adjourn the case at all. However, I'm not so sure that the judges will really be in the mood to hear trials that day, so maybe they'll push it to the next day.

I know our executive director is planning on having a meeting that morning, to be able to talk about our feelings, if we want, as well as to talk about the legal services we're offering to people directly and indirectly affected by 9/11.

I'll be thinking about it all day, but don't know that sitting home would make it any easier. I don't think it should be a federal holiday that gives us an automatic day off, but I do think that there should be some general courtesy towards others' feelings towards the day...at least for this year, as it is still so close. Ask me again next year, and maybe my answer will be different, I don't know.

I totally agree, especially since so many New Yorkers lost loved ones that day. Last year I didn't go to class, and instead stayed home to cry all day and talk to my friend who was in the middle of it and seriously psychologically effected by it.

Since I have no job this year I'm going to go to the memorial service at Lido Beach.

i am looking forward to being at work that day. i'd rather not be home watching the television coverage. its hard for me to watch all the memorials & ceremonies. its all still too recent- too many emotions still attached to it.

my parents are flying that day. i'm not very nervous or worried, but i am slightly concerned. i'm proud of them for doing it though.

I'll be working that day also. I'm a teacher- kindergarten and I will be remembering all too well trying to keep my cool that day as not to upset my kids. At that time I was teaching special ed. k-1. Our school went into lock out and all the 1st grade teachers in my hall took their kids into my room, we put on a video (and kept playing them) while all of us watched what was going on on CNN.com. My collegues had husbands who worked in the city and frequented teh WTC for their jobs. All too scary!!!! Also it was very sad thinking that many of our students had parents working in the WTC who never made it out alive- and we were incharge of them until they received word from a family member as to who would pick them up.

I still get very saddened even though (and thankfully) no one close to me was in the city that day. to all who had.

PS- I think no matter how much time passes for me, I will always remember and react to 9/11 like it was yesterday. This is something you just can't put behind you all the time.

I agree with you 150%! People's feelings need to be respected on that day more than usual.

I will be wearing my 'America: Love it or Leave it' t-shirt. Archie Bunker said it best!

Re: Do you feel like this about 9/11?

Today I sat here and realized how in 5 days will be the 2 year anniversary. It didnt slip my mind, but it really put things into perspective of what I was thinking about or doing 2 years ago. So I got up and decided to go into the city and relax. I went to ground zero.

All I kept thinking was 2 years ago I was here. I walked to my old office and just gazed up at the sky. I went to the church and looked at pictures that were posted, the love notes, teddy bears, cards and candles that are still there.

I walked around the area a little bit and just remincesed about the good old days of the area. The pain that I had felt 2 years ago is still inside. I remember exactly what i wore that day, where I walked, who I saw, who I called and what time I got home.

Last year when they marked the one year anniversary and the mayor read the names of those who perished when I heard the name of a family friend the tears just started to roll.

So now as the 2 year anniversary approaches I just get sad, wish we could turn the hands of time to Sept 10 and be able to prevent the 11th from happening. Some say oh its 2 years already, time should have healed those wounds, but when you sat on the train and watched a plane go into a tower, think of the many friends that I have that are in the towers and hope they are not there and then watch those same towers collapse from the train that is an image you just cant ever forget. Its a pain you just cant ever forget. Returning to an office where their were armed guards, army men, barracades, and getting checked every 5 feet is something i can never forget.

So on 9/11 of this year, I will be sad, but also proud of the things this country has accomplished and has allowed me to accomplish. That is something no one can tell me I cant feel because we have that freedom where many countries dont.

Sorry for the ramble. I did a lot of thinking today.

Re: Do you feel like this about 9/11?

I absolutely agree....Last year on 9/11 I didn't want to go to work at all, but had to b/c we were in the middle of a deal...I have to say that being surrounded by NY'ers who all went through 9/11 together helped...I was suprised how comforting it was....I went to St. Pat's and lit a candle...somehting I will do again this year....

But I agree, each person should be able to choose what feels right to them...
9/11 affected everyone differently and that choice should be theirs...

I live with the effects of 9/11 everyday..yet
Im thrilled about the wedding that someone is planning for next year on 9/11.

I really think each person should do what they feel comfortable with that day.. but respectful to others who may be extra sensitive.

I wont work.. need to fill out 9/11 related paperwork, but that's my choice. I think that the one person who said they were going to work with a 'I *heart* NYC' Tshirt on is a GREAT idea!!

I hope everyone does have a choice. I know that I'm very sad, but will go to work because I want to be with the same people that i was with on that day.

I still can't believe it was real.

I feel cheap just talking about it. Nothing will ever make it better.

i don't want to go only because I feel like I would rather spend the day honoring those lost in some way.

I just looked at that Patriots Day website and seeing those pics brought it all back again....it just haunts me.
