LI? nope

But I have a definite Bronx-y/Yonkers accent.. (or YANKAS as we like to say )

Or maybe I should say mine is more like an Italian/borough accent, being as though my parents are Bronx born and raised..

'Ay, oh ... badda bing.. ' very Sopranos-ish (sorry for the stereotype! I'm Italian, its ok for us to stereotype our own! LOL... and honestly we don't use THOSE phrases anyhow )

When I'm at work, I make it a point to watch how I speak, I do so more carefully so I don't have the obvious accent.. though when I used to travel a lot for work, they still picked up on it and I was always made fun of...

AND when I'm pi$$ed off or mad, the accent comes out in FULL FORCE Or if I'm just generally around my family, we all rub off on one another

DH makes fun of me He grew up in California and Michigan, so he has no NY accent at all... though I say he has some weird mid-western, westcoast ways of saying things myself

i am the exact same way

i usually greet friends by saying

yo, 'sup?

i was actually accused of this accent this weekend-
i was reading a recipe to my fh-
i was like -oooh this sounds good

1 cup of sugar
1 cup of rasberries
1 cuppa ginga

hes like - what? whats ginga?

so now if we are speaking normally he will be like ill be like- oh whats for dinner
he will be like- 'a cuppa ginga!'
anyway, it comes out in me sometimes

Not at all. People are always asking me where I am from. When I tell them I have lived her my whole life they never believe me.

My mom was really big on pronunciation growing up so maybe that was it. I used to think it was so annoying!!

I have a weird accent and I'm not really sure why. It's a long island accent mixed with a southern (I guess would be the correct phrase) accent. I've never lived in the south, but I've had people that have asked me if I have. I always thought it was really strange.

My SIL says 'uuge' instead of 'huge' - it drives me nuts!! I'm always like 'there's an H at the beginning!!'

She also says 'Ax' instead of 'Ask' - it annoys me to no end!!!

Another one is everyone here says 'farhead' instead of 'forehead'

And 'eggclair' instead of 'eclair'

I could go on and on!!!

OMG

Since you brought this up, you reminded me of something that happened in my office. A coworker of mine who is “foreign” was introduced to a vendor of ours who happens to be a Long Islander. She noticed the accent (very slight if you ask me, but noticeable) and after she asks where he’s from she tells him “you have an ugly accent”

We were shocked! Like 5 of us were standing there. She says “You should fix that, seriously. Its bad to have such an ugly accent in our business, people need to understand you. Other accents are ok, French, British, but yours isn’t”.

My issue was A) W T F!?? Who gives anyone a right to say this B) YOU have an accent !! And you are talking poorly about someone else’s? C) Since you haven’t even mastered language, back off! (she explained that when she said ugly she meant ‘hard on the ears’) whatever

We all covered for her and said she was a jokester and she was all apologetic “I meant no offense” but she’s always pulling this kind of stuff. Like 5 mins later she says “Say something in Long Island” *sigh*

Is the 'soft T' a Long Island thing? Like 'kidden' instead of 'kitten', or 'budden' instead of 'button'?

And there's an odd 'E' sound too... 'melk' instead of 'milk'? Or 'Ay-gg' instead of 'egg'?

I have no discernable accent. People think I'm southern which is bizarre, I once got British, but no one ever pegs me as Long Island and only New York if they listen closely and pay attention to how quickly I speak.

I have no idea why....ooh but I'm all new Yawk when I'm pissed!

Yeah, I get the NY thing ( from non-NY-ers) for being a fast talker, too.

In college I was told by co-woprkers that Ith LI came out when I was mad & my roomate told me I sounded very LI for the after sepndignthe summer on LI with my mom.

I think it is definetly fading, b/c I notice other peoples LI accents ( like my mom's!) more now.

I cringe when people don't pronounce all the letters in a word ( well, the ones that are supposed to be pronounced)

you know what I hear in NJ...they will say 'beggel' instead of bagel and 'ayg' instead of egg. And a word like running...it will come out like 'ron-nin''
So weird! This is mainly central / south jersey.

I think the soft T & the weird E go together. I used to work with a girl form Staten Island who said both of those, but I don't knoq enough people from there to blame it on the whole borough.
