you know what I hear in NJ...they will say 'beggel' instead of bagel and 'ayg' instead of egg. And a word like running...it will come out like 'ron-nin''
So weird! This is mainly central / south jersey.

by college roomate from CT used to say begel all the time! we would laugh & her & tell her no,it's BAY-gel, & she couldn't' tell the difference.

I think the soft T & the weird E go together. I used to work with a girl form Staten Island who said both of those, but I don't knoq enough people from there to blame it on the whole borough.

I think they go together too! Mr Boots' little brother and sister say both, but Mr Boots doesn't !

A childhood friend said both too...

And Wendy... WORD on the hate!

NY? Yes. LI? No.

In all of my 34 and a half years and after being raised on LI, I have yet to hear someone say 'Long Island' with a drawl like that. It usually comes from people who aren't from LI who want to make fun of us. Now Jersey is another story.

I have to disagree with you there -- how she spelled it out it is how I always hear it (and say it!!)

My mother gets on me for my pronunciation, especially how I say 'picture' -- I say 'pitcher'. Yep, I'm 34 and Mommy still corrects me!!

To each their own. My mother is afraid to write anything to me because I correct HER.

Is the 'soft T' a Long Island thing? Like 'kidden' instead of 'kitten', or 'budden' instead of 'button'?

And there's an odd 'E' sound too... 'melk' instead of 'milk'? Or 'Ay-gg' instead of 'egg'?

I say 'kidden', and 'budden' I don't think it's a LI thing..I'm not sure

My SIL says 'uuge' instead of 'huge' - it drives me nuts!! I'm always like 'there's an H at the beginning!!'

I have such a problem with my H''s. The first time some pointed this out to me was when I was in my first year at college and a friend of mine pointed it out at the lunch table and everyone laughed. I've learned to come to grips with it - but I'm trying to pronounce my H's when I supposed to !!!

Hey I'm (H)uman !!

ooohh, i got this one. i was doing a lesson for my students and i said melk instead of milk...they couldn't stop laughing!!!!!!!!!! i had to repeat the word 3 more times, and i literally had to stop the lesson and wait until they stopped laughing. and these kids are in QUEENS!!!!!!!

I got teased when I first got to college because of the way I dropped my r's. And the way I pronounced 'mall' which was more like 'maul'.

DH is from Wisconsin and he loves it when I play up my accent. Usually whenever we're going to Fortunoff he makes me do my little schtick, 'We're goin' to the Maul at the Source, and we're gonna have dinna then lata we're gonna go to Borda's and have cawfee.'

It sounds funnier in person.

She also says 'Ax' instead of 'Ask' - it annoys me to no end!!!

Another one is everyone here says 'farhead' instead of 'forehead'

And 'eggclair' instead of 'eclair'

I could go on and on!!!

Oh my goodness, 'Ax' instead of 'Ask' drives me nuts. Also 'breafas' intead of 'breakfast' and 'idear' instead of 'idea'.
