No its totally up to you, we had one with close friends and family but its all about you and FH what you guys want.

No...you definetely don't have to. ..We weren't going to have one, but FMIL decided to throw one for us with just immediate family and our bridal party.

I had mine in my aunts backyard-just family and the BP and we had a great time. This was after we did not want one and my mom was going to throw us one. We figured that it was jut better for us to pay...

But i'm thinking of having some friends over this fall (since most of them haven't seen our place).

I think that sounds like fun! We didn't have a party but we had close family over for a dinner with champagne and the 'good china' ha ha! Have fun with whatever you decide!

I am not having one. I never wanted one. I find them unnecessary. People who wanted to give us engagement gifts gave them to us anyway. We are engaged for less than three months and have a lot of gifts and cards wishing us congratulations. I suppose I see the practicality of an e-party if there is to be a long engagement but not for me. Just not my thing.

celebrate in your own way! an engagement party is not necessary, just a personal choice. there is nothing trashy about a bbq to celebrate your engagement, go for it! have fun! ~lacey

No not at all, that's what I wanted to do with a luao theme. But FH went and proposed to me a Nov so I didn't want to wait until summer so instead we had it at a catering hall that he used to work at and we got a great deal in Feb with a love theme.
You can do what ever you want...you are the boss!!!!

I didn't have one and never wanted one. A bbq to celebrate with friends and family sounds like a great idea.

absolutely not!! there are no rules about e-parties..if you want one, go for it. if not, who cares?

i think its up to you, i don't have any family in new york anymore and i think the whole purpose of an engagement party is for both families to come together and i didn;t want my family to have to make a trip here for that, so we are not having one but weve celebrated many many times, seperately with different people...lol

I don't think you need one. Some people believe very strongly in not having them (ie my family :( ) I had one because I thought it would be fun. I made it low key so people didn't feel obligated to bring gifts. I say, this is your time. Do what you want.
