Do you have to tip the wait staff?

What is the 18% service charge for?

I already know that we need to tip the maitre de a couple hundred dollars.

yep, you do. The service fee is different, it is to pay the wages for the waitstaff.... it doesn't include tip.
If you tip 18% of the total reception fee, I'm under the impression that should be distributed among all staff.......

someone please correct me if I'm wrong!!!!

Where I'm going I was told that the extra 18% before tax includes the tip for practically all involved in the services. But we will be tipping the maitre d on the side... You should just ask who you are dealing with at your RH.

How about the bathroom attendants and valets???

If there are tip baskets in the bathrooms, you don't have to tip the bathroom attendants (though I'd give them a small tip anyway). Don't tip the valets because (no matter what you say) your guests will tip them anyway.

As for the waitstaff, the maitre'd usually splits his tip with the waitstaff -- many halls have a whole run down with a captain's tip, etc. Your RH should go over this with you -- If they haven't, call them and ask. We'll meet with our RH about 6 weeks before the wedding to go over all the details.

18% is a service charge, not gratuity. Covers salary, not the extra you're thinking about. If tip jars, I wouldn't tip. Definitely speak with management about tipping, whether it's ok, how its worked out amongst the staff or if you should tip individually. But be warned, as an ex-waitress, I have worked with some maitre ds and bridal attendants who promised the bride and groom that they would share, but we later found out they pocketed money off the top and then shared the remainder. Yikes!

i heard that too from a client of mine that is a waitress and a rh. the bride and groom give the maitre d the money to be handed as a tip out and they pocket it.

we tipped (on top of the maitre d', captain, and bridal attendant) all the waitstaff and bartenders extra...i don't think you HAVE to, but we did it either way.

I can shed some insight on this. I worked in catering for years, waitressing at probably hundreds of weddings. I never once received a tip from the bride and groom, unless I was their bridal attendant. I see a lot of brides on here saying they are going to tip the waitstaff so I wonder if, when I was working, they did tip us but gave it to the maitre 'd thinking he/she would dispense it. Obviously, they aren't going to go table to table tipping the staff. That being said, if they did give it to the maitre 'd, we never saw it. Before you hand a fat envelope to the maitre'd to give to the waitstaff, I would ask your BM the best way to ensure it gets into the waitstaff's hands.

YES! i heard about this before....that if you give it to the matire d', that like 99% of the time the waitstaff do NOT receive it and the MD just pockets it. we made sure to give it to the captain and tell the waitstaff to look for it just because of this!

Definitely check with your hall. I asked mine and was told that the service charge does go to the waitstaff.

Re: Do you have to tip the wait staff?

I've worked in several catering halls on LI and every hall will tell the couple that the 'Service Charge' goes to the waitstaff and you don't have to tip extra. Technically it does go to the waitstaff, but it only pays them their regular hourly rate between $8 and $10 per hour. I have never received a tip that was given to the maitre'd 'for the waitstaff.' Unless you're going to go around handing tips to waitstaff individually, don't waste your money by giving it to the maitre'd. Just be sure to tip your waiter or waitress when you attend weddings of friends! For some reason people know they have to tip a valet guy who handles their car for 3 minutes, or a bathroom attendant who hands them a paper towel, but they don't tip the waitor/waitress who serves them for 6 hours. That's just not fair!

Yes you do.

Most places include it in the fee for the day.
