We are having the invitations that have the flaps fold inward and then you use a seal to close it. Our friends had this as well and they did not use an envelope at all, but I would like to at least put in in one so that when they take it out it will have a wax seal or something holding the flaps down.
If I only use an outer envelope do I address the back of the actual invitation with the full names of those invited?
PLease help! TIA

Re: Do you have to use an inner envelope?
I'm using a kit that you print yourself and the supplies only outer envelopes. Their directions are to put the names of all those invited in the address on the outer envelope. So you wouldn't write anything on the invitation itself.
If you are inviting husband, wife and 2 kids, you would address it to Mr and Mrs on the first line and on following lines put children's names. If couple with 2 different names you would put each on different lines (I believe). You could go to google and search for invitation wordin info or try the Gartner or Wilton websaites for info - - they make some of the kits and have more detail explaining this. HTH

we had a pocketfold invitation and did not use an inner envelope. if we were inviting a couple and their kids, we put 'mr. and mrs. so and so and family' on the outer envelope.

That's what I did with my pocketfold invitations. I've heard that some people have taken advantage of that and brought extended family members, but I wasn't really worried about that.
The point of an inner envelope is this: back in the old days, a servant would remove the 'dirty' outer envelope that traveled through the mail or the streets, and put the nice clean inner envelope out for the recipient to see. Most of us don't have servants opening our mail (unless you have an assistant) so the inner envelope is a vestigial thing, totally not necessary. Personally, I think it's just a way for printers to charge you more. It's like the little sheets of tissue--a long time ago, they were necessary because the ink was sometimes still wet. Doesn't happen anymore, but for some reason some people think it's classy to have the tissue paper, although it's totally not necessary.

There are SO few people who actually know the REAL reasons for the inner envelope and the tissue paper!
Neither really has a purpose any more.

my invites didn't come wth an inner envelope - we had a sheer wrap that the invite was wrapped in. the place we got the invites told me it was not required.

without an inner envelope and depending on just how heavy the invitation is, you might be able to do it with just the regular 41 cent 1oz stamp. So check the weight before you buy the 2ox stamps.

Re: Do you have to use an inner envelope?
We didn't use an inner envelope either, ours just didn't come with one. I addressed the invitation to the people who were invited.... (Mr. John Smith and Guest.... ) or (The Romano Family.....) it worked out fine. On our response cards it had a line for the name and then __ # attending... no problems with it!
