Do you know how to train a dog from not going on the furniture?!?! Help if you do!

OK...We have ordered new couches...and I Have 2 dogs who drive me nuts!!!!!!!!!

I do not want them on the couches at all. They got used to being on the old one and I go back to work soon..around the same time the couches are due to come in.

I am thinking of gating them in one room but even when I am home, I want to train them not to go on the couch at all. Any suggestions?? They are not the best of listeners!

Its probably going to be hard because they were allowed on the old one. I guess you just have to keep telling them NO when they try to jump up.

I stayed at home with them for 1 week after I got them & kept a rolled up newspaper next to me....whenever they looked like they wanted to jump up, I would hit it against something to make a loud noise & that did the trick.

(except for my pug....but he is crazy, I had to get a shock collar for him )

Also, there is a spray called bitter apple.... the smell is bad & it keps them from doing bad stuff to certain parts of the house.

Hey Melani, do you have any tricks to keep the cats off the furniture when you aren't home?

You might want to try these. They're called 'Scat Mats.' You put them on your couch (or wherever you don't want the dog to go), and if they jump up on it, they get a static electricity shock, like when you touch metal and get zapped in the winter.

Scat Mats

Might be worth a shot.

My two pugs DESTROYED my old sofa...which at the time was fine because I HATED IT!

Well...we ordered new furniture for the entire house from Ethan Allen, and I was having panic attacks, thinking about what my dogs would do to all the furniture.

Funny thing...my two dogs are terrified of the new furniture! We didn't do a thing...it's like they hate new furniture smell! It's been about 6 months, and they hate the new furniture.

We also gave each dog their own dining room chair in the corner of our living room (these are beat up old chairs, and they love them).

So, whenever FI and I are sitting in the living room just relaxing, our two dogs jump on their own chairs and watch us!

I also vote for the bitter apple spray - it worked wonders on my grandma's dog, who was absolutely hyper and nuts.

You can get bitter apple spray at most pet stores. It is perfectly safe to spray on furniture or anything else you don't want your pets to bother.
