To make guests travel from westchester a little over an hour for your reception? Just toying with the idea of checking out some places, that are over an hour from me...Westchester county is ridiculously overpriced!
Please be honest!

Re: Do you ladies think it's rude..
My cousin had her wedding some where so far in NJ and it was a Sunday Night. I thought it was a bit of an inconvenience - I only went because she is my cousin. I think if it was someone that I was not close with I wouldn't attend a wedding that was inconvenient for me.

Re: Do you ladies think it's rude..
You'd know your guests and their tolerance levels the best. Our families will be coming out from Queens and NJ. My family in NJ is going to be travelling for an hour and a half, but they don't care..they just want to be there for our special day. In addition, most of my friends are flying in from all over the country and I have one family member flying in from China and another from Amsterdam!! So, no, I don't think it's rude at all!

Re: Do you ladies think it's rude..
Just a follow up - when I was planning my wedding one of my ideas was to have my wedding at Mohonk and I had such bad responses from my family that it was to far and people would be less inclined to show up. I also had bad responses to my Memorial Day weekend wedding. Its true people that want to be at your wedding because they care about you a lot will make the effort to be there for your. Since my RSVPs are coming in, I am so surprised with the responses - people that I thought would definitely be there declined and people that I thought would decline said yes.

I don't think it's rude. It's your wedding afterall and you should have it wherever you want it. But where did you look in Westchester? For us, Westchester was actually the same, if not cheaper, than most of the LI places we went to (for a sat night). Westchester was in the middle of Queens and Jersey where both our families are from so that's why we ended up there.

I don't think it's rude either. As the previous poster said, those that really want to go will make the effort.

I'm from Rockland and we're having the wedding on LI. A decent amount of my guests are from Rockland, NJ, and CT. They're all going to have to travel over an hour. Its pretty common -- i mean, you're going to have guests from all over and its going to end up being a long drive for some people -- if its that big of a problem they wont come, but you cant please everyone. I say go for it -- we did and no one has complained yet.

If it's travel between the church and reception, that's a little tough but, if it's travel for the whole wedding, that's not so bad!
DH is from Rockland so a good chunk of our guests travelled from there. Most of them got a hotel room and stayed overnight.
I researched places in Rockland and Northern NJ and I found I got more for my $$ on Long Island. In many cases more for less money...

Can I also add that it isn't like you are asking people to travel 3 hours. It really is not that far from where you are talking about. People can easily drive there and back that day. And if they dont want to do that they can get a hotel. I think it would be more rude of them to complain about that short of a distance! JMO.

I agree. I live in Westchester and had some friends traveling from there (as well as Manhattan and NJ) for my LI wedding and it was fine. The church was in Queens so the distance was a little under a half hour to the reception. If the whole wedding is in LI that seems totally fine. We have traveled to NJ over an hour from Westchester to weddings before.

I don't think its rude! But you can't expect everyone to want to come. Its probably bets if its a Saturday night so no one has to leave early from work, and don't have to worry about being at work the next morning...so they could get a hotel room if they want. I'm 'making' my family come 3,000+ miles for my wedding... I figure, if they want to and can come, GREAT, if not thats fine, I totally understand.

i don't think it's rude at all. we have so many people who have said they won't miss it and are flying in from all over the place (germany even!). and then we have some who are annoyed it's on a sunday night and that's ok too. if it's important to them, they'll make sure they're there!!! however, you need to make YOU happy first!!

Re: Do you ladies think it's rude..
most of my 'local' guests have to travel over 90 min to get to the church.... but that's becuase we're getting married where we live, and the guests are scattered all over the place (westchester, NYC, NJ, MD, PA)! In our town, the church and hall are only 4 blocks apart.
If everyone is close to you in westchester, I'd try to stay where it's convenient. No need to get the older guests in a fuss over sitting in a car for a long time if they otherwise wouldn't need to..... try to cut costs other ways... sat or sunday afternoon reception?

Re: Do you ladies think it's rude..
book where you want to. people will have plenty of advanced notice about the distance. if they want to be there, they'll be there. as long as you don't mind listening to people complain, don't worry about it!
