The cake that I chose is covered with fondant, which I think looks absolutely beautiful except that when I chose the cake, I had never actually tasted fondant. I went to a party this weekend and they had a fondent cake and it was terrible. The cake itself was beautiful but it seems that the cake was old and stale becase the cake party was extremely dry and the fondant seemede very hard to me. It could just be that this aprticular cake was not fresh or it could also be that it is just how the fondant is. I don''t want a gross wedding cake. Do you like fondant or think its gross?
I was wondering the same thing. I am obsessed with cake shows on TV and love the way fondant looks, but I have never tasted it and would love to know what it's like.

Re: Do You Like the Taste of Fondant?
It really depends on how they make the Fondant. A friend of mine had her cake covered in Fondant and it was DELICIOUS! for my birthday last year I asked for fondant on my cake and it was DISGUSTING! I've had inbetween where its tasteless, others where its sweet, others where it was stale. I think it also depends on what kind of icing they use to secure it. I personally like it with buttercream (friends wedding cake was made that way, my birthday cake was with whipped cream).
I'd suggest going to the baker you chose and asking them if you can sample. it's not too late to change your selection.

Re: Do You Like the Taste of Fondant?
ive tasted some fondant that is disgusting and others that are very good. Some bakers buy fondant from an outside place, others make it themselves and make the flavor better.
You also said the cake part was stale, whether its fondant or not, the inside should not be stale

Re: Do You Like the Taste of Fondant?
Can you go for a tasting at the same bakery that will be making your cake to see how theirs tastes? It's hard to tell you one way or another b/c a) everyone has different taste and b) each bakery makes it differently. Personally I don't care for the taste of fondant, but our cake design was very simple so it wasn't necessary. If you're getting a design that's a little more complicated or has a lot of detail, then it's tough to avoid using it, just b/c it's easier for the baker to work with.

Usually I don't like it, but my sister ordered my e-party cake and it had fondant that was actually delicious! Everyone at the party was so shocked at how good the fondant really was, because mostly everyone said they typically don't like it.
Personally, while fondant makes the cake LOOK better, I think you'll always be safer with whipped cream or buttercream.

Don't think I've ever had fondant at a wedding but I've heard that the cream cakes are better and easier to cut into.

Fondant definitely makes the cake look prettier, but i don't really like the taste-its too sugary for me, i prefer buttercream

Nope. It tastes either like cardboard or is overly sweet. I usually peel it off and eat the cake underneath. I prefer whipped cream, or a smooth chocolate ganache.

I don't care for it at all personally but it looks beautiful. Many people peel off the fondant but the taste remains.

Re: Do You Like the Taste of Fondant?
honestly it totally depends on the bakery.. if they make it themselves from FRESH ingredients, i happen to love it...but unfortunately MOST bakeries use a pre-made mix and it's not to tastey..very bitter actually. so if u're considering fondant, definetly do a tasting with the bakery u plan on using. Also, dont feel limited! the photo of my cake was definetly fondant, but my rh/bakery assured me that they would use a REALLY smooth buttercream that would give an almost identical route. we went this route just to save $$$..and our cake was beautiful!
i prefer buttercream (or whipped cream) to fondant.

I prefer whipped cream...not a fan of sugary frosting or fondant.

Re: Do You Like the Taste of Fondant?
HATE fondant but sometimes you can get the baker to put a reallllyyyy thin layer over a cake to get that smooth look. good luck!

Re: Do You Like the Taste of Fondant?
some RH's will actually peel off the fondant before cutting the cake and serving it. You should speak to your BM about it and see if they do that, if not you can ask them to. you could ask your bakery to put buttercream underneath the fondant so that that it will taste good when the fondant is peeled off.

Re: Do You Like the Taste of Fondant?
every time i have had fondant it was inedible. i think its used so often to make a cake look flawless. i also think that it cost more money to cover a cake in fondant then in butter cream. so we will not be getting a fondant cake.
