Do you need a MC for the reception ? I see a lot of people are not booking one so who will announce the bride and groom ? Does the reception run smoothly without one?

Re: Do you need a MC for the reception?
I really wasn't going to have one till the DJ said he would throw a mc for just $100 extra and i was like heh what the hell. Plus he did say it did make it run smoother since he can announce while the other guy que's the music.
To be honest I realized he was just selling me the idea to get money but i figured since we are having hte ceremony music, cocktail hour (recorded) and recption done it might be too much for one person so i went with it. I don't think its really neccesary though. Interested to see myself what other brides thought.

So if there is no MC then the DJ would have to do all the work?

yep. the md of the catering hall used to step in years ago or this is what my parents tell me but they don't offer that service anymore. So its all on the dj to be the mc for everything.

We chose not to have an MC...........We been to alot of weddings where the MC would go up to people and practically force them on to the dance floor......IMO if they dont want to dance, thats fine. Our DJ is making all of the announcements and thats pretty much all we needed.

i havent booked yet but I'm prob not going to get one. I 'm having a day wedding with close friends and family, no BP etc. No need for it in my opionion . The DJ I spoke with said that he would make the announcements .....I dont need someone forcing people to dance either Its one's preference.

Re: Do you need a MC for the reception?
My FH is an events manager for EJ the DJ and he says that most DJs are not very good at MC-ing (that's why they are DJs...lol).
If you do get the MC, just make sure you are comfortable with the one you're getting. Try to see some demos of other weddings he's done. We're getting an MC, but we don't want one that's super intrusive. They really do set the pace for the party and they can be really helpful in getting people on the dance floor. However, some of them can be too involved - dancing with your guests and pulling people on the dance floor. You should discuss this with him - let him know wht kind of role you want him to play. For example, we want ours to do the introductions and the announcements, but we really don't want him interacting with our guests.
It depends on your style...

We did not have one.
We had a pianist for the CH and he did it for us before he left when the reception started.
It was perfect because we did not need it afterwards.

Re: Do you need a MC for the reception?
thats another thing many mc's are annoying to guests but making them get up and dance.
I told our mc and dj do not make anyone do anything. Just announce, play my songs and if no one is dancing ask the guests to make sudgestions to what they would like, or tell them the floor is open etc BUT DO NOT take someone by hand and force them up. That and no stupid group dances.
Some people are into that so if you get a mc make sure you specify what you want or not want. Thats why we picked who we did because we know he will respect us.

Re: Do you need a MC for the reception?
If my budget would allow I may have an MC even if I didnt need one but Im just curious, Isnt an MC's main job to get people up and dancing? I mean, most DJ's will do the announcements for you right? Why Have an MC if you are only using him for announcing? When I think of an MC I think of them leading those dances that everyone always does at parties which I am not having. (Maybe 1 or 2 but people should know how to do them). Again, I am just wondering b/c if Im missing something maybe I will re-consider haivng one

A DJ's main focus really should be the music. The MC is the master of ceremonies - the one who not only gets people to dance, but he's the pacemaker of the party - the one who make sure every component of the party is accomplished at the right time. He'll even communicate with the caterer to make sure that everything the entertainment is doing is in line with what time the food comes out. It's actually a pretty important job.

Re: Do you need a MC for the reception?
we booked a DJ and MC. I knew I wanted one b/c my sweet 16 I didnt have one and no one really wanted to dance and for my moms 40th bday we used the same DJ company and she had an awesome MC and everyone had more fun. For the wedding we went with the same DJ company again and I picked the same MC she used b/c I know he's good. He's funny, entertaining, and he gets people to dance (he's a professional dancer too, he didn't force people up either) plus, he'll be doing all the announcements and I might add some things in as well. I'm glad we went with him and I think it was only a few hundred dollar difference

I totally agree with this!
We were actually watching our video (again) this weekend and we noticed how well our DJ and MC worked together that day. The MC would announce something and then point to the DJ to cue the music... it was perfect. I'd recommend an MC to go along with the DJ.

I needed an MC.. actually the only reason why I chose festive was to have the MC I had for my wedding.
A really good MC wont be annoying... I loved mine.

Re: Do you need a MC for the reception?
No, your DJ can make the BP and your announcements as the song is going on. I didnt want someone speaking at my wedding, so I only hired the DJ. If I needed him to make an announcement he did. IMHO its not worth the money, but if you are looking for somone to get people dancing and scream 'come on! Come on!' then you should consider it.
