the Dominican Republic? People have been telling me know but I thought you do?
Anyone know how long the paperwork takes to get one in hand if I have all I need?

I thought my TA had said yes, but now I see that it is not untill 2008. I got one any way.
I have heard that it is a speedier process with a passport

I am 95% sure that starting Jan of 2006 you will need passports for the Caribbean, Mexico, etc. But I would double check a travel agent. Good luck

Yes, DH and I went there for vacation and I remember we needed a passport.

I heard this as well because fiance and I just got back from Cancun, and my son and I didn't have a Passport, and FI did. It was told to us by the airline that the next time we go away which will be this year, we need passports cause ID and Birth Certificates are a one time only thing, and we will need PP's.

it is easier to travel with a passport anyway. and they are good for 10 years. worth it IMO.

i would double check this---i think its 2008 i am going away and my TA didn't say we needed one---and the other place i am going away states 2008 on their website..........just double check and of course it is good to have one anyway!

According to this webiste, the passport requirement doesn't take effect until December 31, 2006. Passport

Well my FH & his freinds are going to DR in April and they were told they needed one.. so he is getting started on his. It takes about 4 weeks. Also my FSIL is going to PR and they need to get one.. so Id say start filling out the paperwork.

I'm going to DR with the family next month and we all needed passports. You will also need a tourist card that can be purchased at the airport for US$10.
Also if you will be driving when you get there you will need a temporary national drivers license. I think the cost of that is about US$14.

I went last April w/ one but my friend did not. JFK gave her more of a hard time departing the country than Santo Domingo did letting her in.
She was warned that when she left DR (on her way back to the US) they may give her a hard time. It didn't happen, but she stressed about if for the weekend.

FH and I went in '03 and only needed our birth certificates.....but i think having a passport is the best idea. my FH just got his, he needed it expedited and got it in under 2 weeks

I think a passport is a great idea... some areas do not accept liscences as a form of I.d.
I was not going to get one, but my fiancee told me when he was younger he remembers a plane having to make an emergency landing in another area... and no one was allowed back out of that area until they showed a pass port.. I at that point gave in and said Sureeee. Just make sure that you dont need to have your birth cert for anything else... because it gets sent with it.

YEs. My husband and I went there for our HM and our 1yr anniversary this past August. Anytime you leave the US its best to have your passport. As for expedite service, you can go in person and get everything done the same day. I did. My passport expired 2 months before my wedding and I did the expedite service, took less than 2 hours in person in NYC. No problems. I still have my old passport because I have visas for South America and Australia that have not expired yet. I carry both.
