Do you need to brown nose and kiss @$$ to make it???

Watching the Apprentice last night got me thinking.

In your careers have you ever seen yourself having to do this to get ahead- where your work alone did not speak for itself?

yes, my current job .... I am not a brown-noser and I am not one to speak up, I believe that one's work should speak for itself (although I do make sure they know when I do well - through email forwards, etc ...) HOWEVER, I am not a verbal person 'I need this, I need that, I want this...' and I have suffered greatly where I am now.

Hence, I am looking for a new job ASAPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

I don't brown nose and I think I've made it pretty far for my age. i still have alot to go but I'll do it NOT brown nosing.

I'm in eduation...and yes you have to brown nose and kiss ass (in addition to doing a stellar job)...until you get tenure

In my company, It seems only the brown nosers and kiss assers get the promotions and raises that they want, but the people that work hard and do more than they are supposed to do get looked over....when it comes to the time for raises and promotions, or we dont get as much as the brown nosers. I work hard and sometimes do two peoples jobs and I still do not get treated like I should.

Its not fair and I cannot wait to get out of this place. As soon as I can find another job, I am gone.

Ahh yes.. the Sweet Ballet called Office Politics.

Yeah.. I've tapped a tune or two for my benefit. I learned by being used as the floor which others danced their ways up on. It only took a few good squashings to realize I had to 'play the game' as my father says. I work really hard and I am a near perfectionist and none of it means a thing. I have to keep an ear and eye out at all times.

Brown-nose? Not really I just watch what is or is not said about those which may effect my job. Be that the boss, a bossy coworker or you know that coworker who is the BEST brown noser put on earth?

I try to spread a few really nice compliments about me through the year. At least once every 6months or so I get a really nice letter from a client and I make sure that in some indirect way my boss gets a copy.

All that and I'm still a failure. Without a Bachlor's Degree I am abolutely nothing in my office. I know that. They pay for us to go back to school so probably in the summer I'll take a single class then after the wedding I'll really hop back to it. But I know I'm nothing to them so I don't let it get me down I just make myself irreplacable and keep my head down, do my job and tap dance when called to.

ETA: it never bothered me that I got crappy raises when others who did less got more. Mostly cause I just sat around learning all I could from the company I worked for. It was like a paid education. I absorbed it all. I practiced my work and fine tuned details then got the heck out. No matter how frustrated I got, I always figured 'Fine, but what I learn you can't take away, what i gain from this company I take with me'.

I've been lucky. Been promoted at every office I work at within 2 years. But it cost me blood sweat and literally HOURS of work. Even now (with no chance of promotion until i get my degree) I work 9 hour days everyday. In a few years when I'm done with school I'll then get pissy if I get no promotion for now.. im bidding my time.

I would never stay at job where I had to brown nose or kiss behinds to get ahead. I am who I am - at work, at home and at play. I just can't be a brown noser.

BUT i do believe it is 'WHO YOU KNOW'
And if you know the right people..life is easier!

That is so true. I have had 10 bosses in 4 years...Lets just say I do not know the right people.

THIS IS VERY TRUE!! It is always good to have a bunch of 'ins'

Thankfully, my current boss HATES brown nosers. I'm glad, because I could never do it!

I wish I worked for someone who hated brown nosers!

We have this new schmuck in the office who's going to wind up with my foot in his a$$ one day because he makes me physically ill with all the kissing up he does...of course, he has to kiss up because he doesn't do any freakin work, comes in late, leaves early and lays blame every chance he gets.

I hate kissing up but in this place you have to...actually, the office manager pulled me aside a year ago to tell me that's how you survive here - smile and nod at the schmuck in charge. The only solace is that most of the office feels the same way as I do.
