I know he/she is technically supposed to be invited but most decline (unless friend of family etc). Whether or not you actually physically send them a paper invitation I am not sure.

Nope, basically from the get go he told us not to waste our money on sending him and invite since he always declines

Is that the case for a catholic priest too? Do we send him an invite?

It depends. I think you only send them an invite if you want them to come to your reception.

Yup, we invited my Rabbi and his wife (I have known them for over 15 years), but they did not attend the reception.

We probably won't because we don't really know the Deacon marrying us that well. FH is his garbage man, but that's about it lol

it is proper etiquette to invite the officiant to the reception, particulalry if it's a religious wedding. how do you NOT invite the person that witnessed the msot important part of the day?

Granted, they often decline due to other committments, particualrly if they are active clergy (priest, deacon, rabbi, etc.) but it is still polite and in my opinion, proper etiquette to invite.

Our priest is a personal friend, so he would have been invited regardless and he did attend the reception. We had another priest con-celebrate the Mass with our friend and we invited him as well, but he declined.

We are, but that is because he is going out of his way and returning to our parish to perform the ceremony.

Ditto on inviting the officiant being proper etiquette. We used a retired judge. He stayed for the cocktail hour but not for the reception due to another commitment so we didn't include him in our headcount. Our officiant also keeps the invitations in a portfolio, both as personal momentos and to demonstrate to prospective clients how many weddings he's done.

I did for two reasons:

FH and I know him very well- also he needed the directional card to our RH.. lol
And also so his wife can see (we both know her as well for a long time). However because of where we're having the reception (its not kosher) he's only staying for the ceremony.

Other than that reason idk if you have to....
