Do you think I will be able to get my $500 deposit back from SandCastle?
Original post by Rina
As many of you know I put down a $500 deposit at the SandCastle for my e-party next year in May. Well, today my cousin came over and told me that my FI and I should go to Russo's on the Bay and do the e-party in the Tivoli Room. Little did I know that my cousin is close with the owner and higher management. He told me that we will go together next week and that he would be able to get a really good price, less than what I'm paying at the SandCastle.
Less is always a plus...and hey it's Russo's. Granted I love the SandCastle, but if my cousin can get me an awesome price, then to Russo's I go.
Now, the problem. If I go to Russo's, would I be able to get my $500 deposit back at the SandCastle? Has anyone ever booked and gave a down payment and then ask for it back because they changed halls? What's a good excuse? Should I be honest or say something else? Thanks for listening.
My next question....If I do have my e-party at Russo's, does it look tacky if I get married there also?

Honestly, I think it's worth whatver extra $$ it woul cost to ave the e-party at sadncastle, so you don't have wedding and e-party at the same place. Honestly. I think it makes your wedding anticlimactic. And where cna you go after Russo's? I REALLY wouldn't do that! You don't want your wedding to be been there, done that.
ETA: If you decide to have your wedding somewhere other that russo's, then you have to try to 'beat' Russos', and I don't know how much you can beat Russo's by. I think it's probably better to keep it separate and make SURE you can make your wedding a BIG step up, or at least quite different from your e-party.
That's exactly the problem...what else can beat Russo's...maybe it's better I not go with my cousin and therefore, won't have to be tempted by the price they give. I want to go...but I think it's better if I don't...what do you think?

I think you should go as consideration for booking your WEDDING there instead of your E-party.
Or ... start thinking about places like Oheka Castle ($10K++ site fee PLUS $150 (min)and up per plate) for your wedding. I really don't know too much about Russo's except that it's really really nice and really expensive... I'm not sure 100% how these other places compare but I would put them up there for consideration if you do decide to go with Russo's:

What does your contract with the Sand Castle state? A lot of places state the deposit is non-refundable.
I agree with the others about having the e-party & wedding in the same place. There are too many places around here that it's really not necessary plus, like others stated you want your wedding to stand out as something extra special from your e-party.
ETA - can your cousin get you the price break for the Wedding?
Yeah, my cousin could get us a break for the wedding also...so that's good. I looked over the contract and it did say non-refundable. I guess I was kind of hoping for someone to say you can get it back. I don't want to lose $500 at all...hell..I wouldn't even want to lose a $1...lol. I really love to save money any way possible. Luckily, I come from a family that has been able to give me everything...But a baragins a baragin. I really need to balance out whether: 1)saving money is more important, or, 2)whether wanting your wedding to stand out is more important.
Granted I love all the planning and everything else that comes along...but so much stuff is not necessary.... yet you still want it. It's weird because I've always lived my life by this saying...'If it's not necessary to survive, I don't need it'....but with this e-party and wedding, etc...it seems like I'm slightly changing.
I also agree with you Christine...I'd rather my wedding stand out way more than my e-party. I don't want my e-party to be equal to my wedding...it would really look like...been there, done that. But then, if it saves you more in the end....that's what kills me...I'm such a baragin shopper...EVEN FOR MY OWN WEDDING. Am I nuts?

i THINK IT IS TACKY TO HAVE AN EPARTY IN THE TIVOLI ROOM WITH THE COMING THRU THE (damn caps) floor and the wall and that jazz. I also find it weird to make such a big deal about an eparty. I had mine catered at my MOH's apt in Manhattan with a gorgeous view of the River and all the buildings. I believe it was catered by fresh direct with about 40 people and it was a blast. You are not supposed to invite everyone who is invited to a wedding to an eparty. It is for the close/immediate family, people that live in-town, bridal party and very very close friends. It is an intimate occassion announcing your marriage to people that really matter not Aunt Joanne's friend from high school's Mah Jong friend Ann.
True it's only an e-party, but my family goes overboard with everything unfortunately and they are always trying to top the next event they plan. I only want to have at most 110 at my e-party...and that's only immediate family and the bridal party and a few close friends. I already had to cut out some members of my immediate family, which my mom really doesn't agree with. My family is huge and my FI family, fortunately is not as big as mine. This is going to be sooooo much fun, especially dealing with my parents.

It's in Huntington, actually Cold Spring Hills, just at the Suffolk/Nassau border.
I would give myself a solid hour from Queens to be safe.

Money really isn't the issue...it's just I love baragin's and when my cousin said he could get me a better price at Russo's...I went nuts. Then I started imagining the things I could do at Russo's as opposed to the SandCastle and now I'm lost in the mix. I really, really love the SandCastle and think we are getting a great deal with them. The food at the SandCastle is awesome. My cousin was kind of freaking me out and telling me that I haven't been to the SandCastle as many times as Russo's and thus, at least at Russo's I can guarantee that people will leave happy. He had a point, but even though I've only been at SandCastle once, everyone spoke highly of it.
Me personally, I think the food at the SandCastle compares with Russo's just as well. I really don't like the temptation of Russo being waved in my face.
Also, your so right...the vienessian hour at Russo's leaves you in complete awe. It does it for me each time.
