SAN DIEGO - Scott Peterson was arrested in San Diego on Friday in connection with the disappearance of his pregnant wife, a sheriff's deputy said as police prepared to announce a 'significant' development in the case.


Peterson was being transported to Modesto, said the deputy, who spoke on condition that his name not be used. Modesto scheduled a news conference for Friday night to announce a development in the case.


The arrest came amid heavy speculation that the body of a woman that washed ashore in the San Francisco Bay this week was that of Laci Peterson. The body of a baby was found about a mile away.


The state's DNA laboratory in Richmond has been 'working 24-seven' to identify the remains, said Hallye Jordan, a spokeswoman for the state Attorney General's office. The lab was trying to confirm that the remains are those of Laci Peterson and the son she was due to bear in February.


Scott Peterson has not been seen in public since the decomposed remains washed ashore in Richmond, 90 miles away from the couple's Modesto home. The bodies were found about a mile apart on Sunday and Monday by people walking the shoreline.


Scott Peterson's attorney, Kirk McAllister, had refused to disclose his client's whereabouts this week. McAllister did not immediately return a telephone message Friday from The Associated Press.


Peterson had told police he last saw his 27-year-old wife Christmas eve as he left to go fishing at a Berkeley marina, which is three miles from where the bodies were found.


Modesto police seized his boat, pickup truck and nearly 100 items from the couple's house but had not formally named him as a suspect in the disappearance.


Scott Peterson's parents live in Solana Beach, north of San Diego. A knock at the door of their home went unanswered Friday evening.


From virtually the moment his wife was reported missing, Scott Peterson's moves and statements have been scrutinized by authorities.


Peterson traded in his wife's Land Rover for a new pickup truck, considered selling their home and eventually admitted an extramarital affair with a Fresno woman while his wife was pregnant with the couple's baby.


Massage therapist Amber Frey said she became Scott Peterson's girlfriend after he told her he wasn't married.


Shortly after, Peterson said he'd told his wife about the affair in the days before she vanished.


'It (the affair) was not a positive, obviously ... but it was not something that we weren't dealing with,' he told ABC's 'Good Morning America.' 'It wasn't anything that would break us apart.'


The affair turned Laci Peterson's family against the son-in-law they had earlier supported. They begged him to cooperate with Modesto police, who had labeled him 'uncooperative.'


Scott Peterson launched his own search effort, separate from the one organized by his wife's family and sanctioned by police. At one point, as searchers looked in the San Francisco Bay and around Modesto, Scott Peterson showed up in Los Angeles to distribute fliers to volunteers at a local hotel.


'We simply have to expand the geographical area,' he said at the time.

In February, Scott Peterson told MSNBC he missed his wife.

'I can't drive. I can't sleep,' he said then. 'Sometimes I feel I just can't do it. I feel like I'm in a dark corner and I just can't function.'

He's a guilty as the day is long, and I hope someone tortures that b*stard to death, revives him, and does it again, revives him, and then sentences him to life in solitary confinement. Death is too kind for a scum ****ing animal like him.

Lets not forget about the $250,000 life insurance policy he had taken out for her right after they found out she was pregnant. To me that's the strangest thing about his actions.

I haven't been following the case closely but I can tell you the media want you to think he's guilty. He probably did do it, a lot of things point at him. But lets not forget that if the media want us to think it's him, they're not going to show us other things that may support he didn't do it.

I don't think its too strange to take out insurance when you start to have kids...

yes...in a court of law he is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty...but the courts do not have to decide what i think...i think guilty...i almost always think the family is guilty (ie JonBinet)

Ugh, this makes me sooooo friggin mad! If he did it, what a complete moron to tell everyone he was fishing the day she disappeared and then, look at that, her body was found in the marina where he was fishing!! And, did you see the recent pics of him? He now has blond hair and a blond goatee...hmmm, he didn't look like that when she first disppeared. He definitely did it, they should kill him if he is guilty the way he did it to her and their unborn son!!

The first time I heard of this case on the radio I immediately thought he was responsible. It resebled another case 15 years ago of a husband killing his wife on Christmas Eve. It is so so sad for all involved.
