He must have been listen to BS 104.5 *bull S*&^ 104.5* because that is the craziest thing I've ever heard.

How was it the craziest thing you have ever heard. Mind explaining that to me??

DOn't mind at all.....as you all already know, my man is a US Marine, there is not going to be a draft any time soon. It's crazy because there is no reason forit. Our military is strong and growing. Enrollment being down doesn't mean nobody is joining just less than in the past. However, there are also people who are fighting to join, like my friend Martin who got turned down for an injury. Just another example of how the media runs wild with crazy ideas. we are in no drought as far as enlistment is concerned.

Despite a rising tide of combat deaths and the prospect of deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan for years to come, Americans continue to volunteer for duty and are re-enlisting at record rates

'The war is not only not having a negative effect, but it is helping to reinforce the number of people who want to join,' said Cmdr. John Kirby, a spokesman for the Navy's Bureau of Personnel

Thanks for explaining! But, I can't say that I am 100% at ease though. Although the military and gov't says everything is fine, records enlisting and re-enlisting, still make me cautious, because in all honesty, the gov't and army are not going to come out and admit that there is a shortage and possibility for a draft down the line. The US Government and the US army are known to hide things. And a possible draft that would cause lots of problems is not something they would come out and announce!!

ETA- I was talking to my boss today and we were discussing the draft issue and if all was as good as they say, she does not understand why her 52 year old cousin is being involuntarily called to Iraq after being out of service for many many years!! If there are so many people willing to serve, than why are there so many people being called back involuntarily??

I agree they would'nt go announcing it like it was a good thing, but I can tell you from at least one recruitment station here on Long Island that the reports seem true. Numbers are up. Just before lenny went over seas we visited his recruiter at the park over by Hofstra that they train in before boot camp. There were so many Marines in training there it was nuts. MUCH MUCH more than when lenny had enlisted.

Did she say what his MOS or job was.
For example I am an imagerary specialist with intelligence training. I am highly aware that even though my enlistment is up I am in a career field that requires highly specialized training and there may not be enough of us on active duty or in the reserves with my security level or trainig so I can be activated..

besides that the media takes the stories of the involuntary call backs and makes them seem like they happen everyday to tons of people, they over publicize it just like every negative thing they get their hands on

I don't think there should even be a thing as an involuntary callback. We are a country that has prided itself on having a strictly volunteer Armed Forces for years.

This may be ok for the jobs like infantry etc but for jobs like Aviation where the higher you score on the Asvab is what gets you that specific job..beleive me you want involuntary call back if we dont have enough specilists. There are some jobs that alot of people dont have the intellect to do.

Considering the fact that I don't think that invading Iraq had anything to do with our national security this question is moot.

Either we have a voluteer military or not. Unvouluntary callbacks are a form of a draft IMO.

actually the problem comes when people get discharged and are so happy to be out that they dont read the fine print of their discharge orders Most of the military know that this is a risk they take..some just dont want to think they will be activated or that the odds are slim and honestly..some tune out during outprocessing and miss that important tidbit of info.
Cant blame anyone but yourself..especially knowing how recruiters can promise you the world to enlist.

When you get your discharge papers. What about when you enlist? Is it stated then? If not it seems really underhanded and not legal.

I understand we disagree on this issue. I certainly respect your opinion.

yup. I got lucky. I think lol.
Mine wanted to sleep with me so he really put all the facts on the table that and my dad threatening him that if there is any fine print he knows where his office is

Not all are honest but as my MSgt said..always read the fine print..that is a rule for the military and everyday documents.

It is stated many times but alot of people dont concentrate on it at that point becasue they are soooooooo scared of bootcamp/basic training. As I said before..you get alot of paperwork and everything is there. thats why it is so hard for people to cry foul..becasue your signature is on it. BEFORE you ship out for training.

I think it's ridiculous! The thought of my little brothers being sent off to war scares me to death! I will not let that happen to them.

I read somewhere that if there is a draft it will be very specialized- for like those in medicine- special jobs that are needed- not a mass of soldiers....

If there is a Vietnam like draft- I'll tell my brother (who's 18) to either run or go to jail..

But I don't know if it would happen because you'd see a lot of angry parents in DC right quick.
