Yes, here is yet another question from a new puppy mom I was just wondering how cold is TOO cold to take Golem out for a walk?? He does all his potty business in our backyard, so the walk is for daily exercise. He doesn't seem to mind the snow/cold weather - actually, I think he prefers it because all he wants to do outside is eat snow! He gets really hyper at night though because he's been in his crate all day - and I love taking him for long walks because it calms him down and gets him out of the house. However - with this terrible cold weather we've been having lately, I'm worried that a long walk might be bad for him, so we've just been going around the block for 5 minutes instead. I feel like this is a stupid question, but is it safe to take him for a 30 - 45 minute walk in this weather? I walked him for almost an hour on Monday night, and he was fine when we got home (even though I took almost another hour to thaw out!) Our breeder also said that the cold weather is fine for them - so I hope I didn't go overboard with my long walk the other night..... Well, anyway - how long do you all walk your dogs in cold weather? TIA!!!

awww - I just can't picture your little babies out there in this cold!! They are so cute!
Golem is pretty diesel for a pup though - I have a feeling that it's okay, but at the same time, it's nice to hear feedback from others too!

I don't like taking Brownie for walks in the cold weather, but she needs them to mellow out like Golem...no one is home with her all day, so she sleeps all day and is ready to play when we get home....but I heard that its not good for their paws to be out too long in the cold....she loves the snow too, but I try to get her in after 15-20 mins of playing in the snow...

I think it depends on the dog. If Golem is happy in the cold, you're probably fine. I know Satchmo will start to shake all over and run for the door to get back in the house in this weather, but his breed (pointer) carries very little body fat and has a really short coat. I bought him a little red sweater to wear on walks and I have been putting that on him for the past two days when it has been really cold. I have also been taking him for shorter walks, although he drove me nuts last night because he was so hyper-active without his long evening walk. He was pretty good on his walk this morning; he wore his little sweater and we did about a 10-15 minute walk; he was fine, but he was ready to go in when we got back home.

Re: Do you walk your dog when it's this cold?
thanks for the feedback ladies! Golem is funny - he practically bumrushes the door when he knows we're going outside for a walk! I'm kinda convinced that he doesn't even notice that it's only 12 degrees out! We walk on the sidewalk and it's cleared of any snow or ice too, so from what I'm hearing - I think we're okay for at least a 20 minute walk in this weather. These walks are more for his own benefit though - without them he just has too much energy and doesn't know what to do with it. That's when he'll get cranky and start nipping everything in sight! UGH - I am so looking forward to this teething phase to be overwith!! Thanks again all!!

Re: Do you walk your dog when it's this cold?
Asia LOVES this weather! Keeping her in the house is punishment! When she's inside she sleeps pressed up against the doors. Rotties are winter dogs - they love it! She has a sweatshirt I put on her sometimes, but for the most part she just rolls around in the snow so what's the point? I don't keep her out long (I can't stand the cold!!) maybe just like 10 minutes or so.
oh, she looks so HAPPY in the snow! :) Asia is such a beauty - I just love seeing pics of her!
Okay, I totally feel better now about bringing Golem out in this weather As long as I'm properly bundled up, I can deal with this weather, so tonight we're back to our Mom and Golem long walk! Thanks so much everyone!!

Peanut is too small, I think I would lose her in the snow!! Evan if accumulation is only a couple of inches I haven't really been taking her out the past couple of days (Guess it's a good thing she uses wee wee pads right now!)

I haven't been walking Casey in this weather...even when I let her out in the yard, she does her business, plays for 5 minutes then scratches to come in. It's even too cold for her!

My lab loves the snow...she hops around like a moron and everyone on the street laughs. She doesn't get cold too much but I do...lol. I let her out in the backyard though when the weather is this cold.

Re: Do you walk your dog when it's this cold?
My Charlie - a Corgie mix - loves to be outside and run in the snow!!! Being that we live in a co-op I have to walk him 3-4 times a day so he can do his thing. I don't have a yard. Since I got him as a pup (he's 12 now), he does #1 in one spot, #2 in another spot, sometimes a second #2 lol, then he wants to run home! He just wants to do his thing so he can get a treat lol
