My daughter is going to be 7 in a month so me and FH agreed that its time to get her a dog. We went down to Yuppie Puppy NOW A&G’s JUST PUPPIES, in Port Jefferson. FH and I went down 1st with out our daughter…found a cute Toy Fox Terrier. The DOG is A HE at this point, and is $495.00. WE both agreed we would come back with Emily and if she likes it we would bring it home. We came back in 1hr. The dog was still there, they bring us into a room so we can aquatint ourselves with the dog. SHE wants the dog. FH goes out into another room to discuses price (now $450.00) and all the info needed. He is told that he does not get “breeders rights”. Now as you read this ask your self what does this mean “breeder’s right”—you can not breed the dog ok we just want him as a pet not to breed no big deal. Now papers are filled out, payment info is given, we are told we DO NOT GET PAPERS for the dog to prove he is a pure breed. WHAT well I told you that before, you are “adopting” the animal (because we are not paying full price) so you DO not get the papers…do we need these papers??? How much for you to now give us the papers ??? An extra $100.00 we say OK…..the woman that original wrote up the paper work now has to fill out another form because we are now not “adopting” the FEMALE dog….yes now HE is a SHE because they did not give us the correct info. The woman says to us with a complete attitude WELL now I have to fill out a WHOLE nother form and THIS will take me SOME TIME. So FH says don’t make it out to be my fault that you have to do YOUR WORK. She get all huffy and puffy and runs to get her managers….to make a long story short the manager Anna Diita said right in front of our Daughter I WILL NOT SELL YOU THIS DOG… (we were unfit to own the dog because, she blew up the whole situation) (we wanted the papers –that she did not have and could not produce she would rather just not sell us the dog) SO now what does a father do?? He told her he will be bringing this dog home with us….he stayed there and told her I will not leave until you sell me this dog!!!! Another long story short…after 1hr she called the cops ( she was very hesitant to do this) The cops came, we left nicely and the COP said GOOD thing you did not get the dog…this place has the WORST DOGS, they get sick…and the owners of the store drop there hands. You supposedly get 4yr warranty if the dog get sick or dies they will give you a new one THEY DON’T. They have the cops there on a regular basis, people picket in front of the store because they do not take care of the dogs and just run a poor business. SO EMILY still does not have a dog but she will get one. Please if you are thinking of ever getting a dog DO NOT go to Yuppie Puppies AKA JUST Puppies (due to all the law suits as per the cop they had to change there name) in Port Jefferson.

Re: Do you want to buy a puppy???
If the police are constantly there, how are they still open? Shouldnt this business been shut down already by the town? I'm sure there are enough complaints and reports.....and then donate the animals to other reputable stores/mills/.
Horrible! Absolutely horrible!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry to hear you had such a horrible experience!
My FH and I were in Port Jeff a few years ago looking at all the puppies in the window and his friend's wife told us basically the same thing you just said, don't buy puppies from there.
Good luck finding a puppy for your daughter!

That place is the worst ever, I swear they drug their dogs, I have never seen such lethrargic puppies in my life. Please NEVER EVER buy a dog from a pet store. If you MUST have a pure breed dog, then go to a reputable breeder. Otherwise you should go to a shelter where there are thousands of dogs who need good homes.

they even have an article on the window why the 'puppies' are always sleeping...that they are puppies and need to sleep just like an infant baby...they are not all puppies and they are all ways sleeping... That is what his mom told us also to NOT get a dog from any store and to get it from a shelter or reputable breeder.

That is exactly what the cop was saying He wishes they would go out of business. They should not have there doors open. But when ther are to many complaint's and law suits they just change the name. Its soo said . I am not an 'animal' lover but I am human and I feel sooo bad for those poor dogs in that store.

Re: Do you want to buy a puppy???
I agree, try to find a breeder. I got my shih tzu from a breeder, and the price was $850 less then that of a friend who got hers at a pet store. Hers ended up being very sickly, while mine has never, ever gotten sick. (Knock on wood).

I think part of the reason they are all sleeping is they are depressed. A puppy isn't meant to be locked in a small cage all day with no exercise, little human affection (petting, cuddles) and no separate area for sleeping (dogs don't like to poop where they sleep). Poor pups!

Re: Do you want to buy a puppy???
I'm sorry you went through this. But please, please, please do not buy pets from petstores!! By doing so you are supporting puppy/kitten mills and condoning the uncruel and unsanitary treatment of pets!! Adopting from rescue groups and shelters is not always easy...but there ARE reputable, loving breeders out there that breed out of love for the breed and will almost 100% guarantee that you are getting a healthy, happy pet. A quick 'google' search will lead you in the right direction. AKC breeder info...
I'm sorry about your daughter...pelase look into breeders!

I would never buy a dog from ANY Petstore. Go to a reputable breeder or adopt. THe breeders are around the same price for pet quality animal and you can see exactly where the dog is coming from.

Re: Do you want to buy a puppy???
Yes, I have seen ever since I was a young girl people boycotting that store and the police are there all the time. Just the overwhelming smell in the store and the way the dogs look, most of them have upper respitory infections and eye drainage problems, is very disturbing. I feel bad for them. I do have to say that from what I've personally experienced... the man that owns 'Pick of the Litter' in Smithtown seems very knowledgable, honest, he gives papers, he gives you the name of the breeders so you can speak with them, etc. He is very up front. He does not keep too many dogs in there at once, the place is very clean and even the smell (which is hard to control) is minimal. We went looking recently because we are considering buying a Brussells Griffon (the dog from As Good As It Gets). Good Luck... hope whatever dog you get is great and your daughter loves him/her!!

Re: Do you want to buy a puppy???
Omg Heather..I'm so sorry you had that experience. My cousin got her dog from there years ago and the dog became so sick she had to take him for injections weekly at her vets office. Also..before I bought my dog [from a breeder]..I went there and found a chocolate lab I was intestered in buying. I kept asking the sex of the dog because I only wanted a male. They kept assuring me it was a male [UM, they should have known..the dog was already 6 months old]...anyway..they put the dog in a room with me and sure enough it was a female!!
They are so horrible over there and they treat their dogs like crap.
I'm so glad you didn't get a dog from there..you would've had many problems there down the road.
Try going to a breeder. I got my chocolate lab from one and I paid only $450 for him..papers and all.

Re: Do you want to buy a puppy???
I have heard nothing but horror stories about that place, I heard they get their dogs from puppy mills, good thing you didn't get the dog there. I got my dog from one of the breeders I found in the paper and he came with papers and everything. He is 4 now and in perfect health and great temperment and he is pure breed although it would be nice to safe a dog as well. They sometimes have purebred dogs at North Shore or Biide a wee or what about the league of animal protection I think it is in Northport?
