A friend of mine has a Masters in Social Work. She wants to become a guidance counselor in the DOE. What does she need to do? Is there a certification process?
As always, Thanks!

Re: DOE teachers/counselors I have a question....
I assume there is a cerification process, and she will need to be fingerprinted by the DOE. It costs a bit of $$ (I think it was about $80 when I did it back in 1996)
She will have to be certified by NYS and licensed by NYC. They are two separate processes.
I am sure the process has changed since I did it (and I would hope so, since it was a nightmare). The best place for her to start would be the NYCDOE website and the NYS Education Department website.
I don't know much about the process of actually finding a position, but she needs to do the things I mentioned before she can be placed.

Anyone know of any openings on the island for counselors? my friend has her masters in it and has been sending out so many resumes--it's so hard out there!

She will have to go back to school to receive her masters in school counseling. It is a tough field to get into on LI.

I know my sister is just completing her masters in school counseling and she just went to get fingerprinted. She is looking to send out resumes for next year, but hasn't heard of any openings yet.

So basically her MSW means nothing in terms of being a guidance counselor. If that is true, then I was correct. I thought they were two seperate things.
Thanks!

Yup, they are two different things. I'm currently in a counselin program (although for me, it's for mental health counseling). There are school social workers (usually a max of 2 to a school) and then school counselors (we don't call them guidance counselors any longer). Those are the scheduling, etc people. If you're lucky you get to do appx 2 hrs of actual 'counseling' a week .

She can still apply to the DOE as a school social worker. They are opening so many small new schools that she might be able to find something.

There are a LOT of unemployed people with that masters. We get tons of resumes from them, looking to work at a college.
