I cannot find anything for my FSIL to do at the wedding - she was hurt she was not asked to be in the BP (but understands why) and is not the right person to do a reading. I am hesitant to ask her to do the guestbook or something like that, as it tends to be the 'leftover' role sometimes...
I have heard people say they will have someone be a witness - is that only if you are not having a BP??
If I did have one, what in the world would their role be?

Re: Does a 'witness' do anything? (besides witness)
I think it's the signing of the marriage certificate and would be your MOH.

I think you can choose anyone to sign your marriage cert- it does not have to be your MOH...
Can you have her be a female usher? This can include helping to receive guests as they come in, she can help coordinate picture taking and bascially- help you- like a BM- but, when they are tied up in pics- it may be helping to have someone else.. Maybe there can be a more creative title.

Are you having a mass? If so, she could help bring up the gifts.

You could also have her present the rings. I am putting fake rings on RB pillow. My brothers are not in my bridal party since I wanted a small one. Each brother and wife will present a ring to the officiant.
