I mean should the STDs match the invites match the menus and placecards? Or at least have a recurring theme?
I already know what invites I'm getting, but their other stuff is pretty expensive. Would it look wierd if I got the STDs from elsewhere and DIY'd some simple menus and placecards? Would that look too 'all over the place'?

definitely not at all.
My STDs don't match the invitations, but since we are making our own invitations, and placecards, programs, table signs, that will all match for me.

no, they def don't need to 'match'. i DIY'd my save the dates,but wanted thermography for my invites, so i found a complimentary design in the same colors (easy cause it was black and ecru). i am DIYing my programs, menus, escort cards, and tables numbers. I am keeping a theme in the paper and the monogram (same as the STD)and the font style. It's about creating the look and feel that you want your wedding to have.

They don't have to match. Mine did, but it wasn't hard for me to find everything that worked together. The menus I am using are the RH one's and that definitely doesn't match.
