does anyone else feel like

we are spending WAY too much money on a wedding..i was talking to girls at school yesterday and they were all saying how in other places than long island people don't spend this kind of money..i'm just thinking boy all this money and my guests are going to be on a timeline..we HAVE to eat by a certain time, desserts HAVE to be out by a certain time..everyone HAS to be out by a certain time..i just wish i could have spent this money on a huge house somewhere where my guests could have lingered all night if they wanted..sorry had to vent..its getting close and all the money is FLYING out the window

I do understand, everytime I write a check I get chest pains. I wayed out the whole day and said we could put all the money down on a house then selfishly enough I want my pictures. So were renting instead. Its alot of money for 6 hrs but when were 50 it will be nice

so far we have been sticking to our budget and saving for the down payment on a house i knew i didnt want to go overboard because we are paying the majority of the wedding ourselves.

I am in agreement with you!! I have seen friends of mine spend more on a wedding than they would need for a VERY LARGE down payment on a house. It is INSANE!

That’s why when FH and I first got engaged we wanted to keep it small and simple. Fast forward to present day, we managed to keep the guest list small, but simple it is not. By NY standards it is, but compared to what we first planned, it’s a lot more of a wedding than we thought we would have.

Our goal is keeping the cost below $16,000 – including the HM. and we’re doing a GREAT job!!!!! Of course, a budget like that only allots for 50-60 people. We cut all the kids out in order to be able to keep the count down. We’ve also eliminated people who would normally be invited like extended friends and family. (I’m not inviting relatives of mine that I haven’t seen since I was a teenager).

Everyone I spoke to about this loves the idea of a small intimate wedding where you don’t spend ½ the reception saying hello to people. And the best part… we don’t have to go into our house fund to pay for it!!

Im right there with you Jus. Its crazy. A friend of mine who lives in Flordia went to a wedding there and the reception was in a high school gym!!! With the basektball hoopes lifted up the way they would be when you go to an event when you are in high school. SO CRAZY!! FH and I trying to cut costs as much as we can because we want to buy a nice house. I still have so much time to go and the money is already being thrown out the window. CRAZY!!!

The key is BUDGET - and STICKING to the budget! Even if you fall in love with that vendor or that dove release or that extra lil thing that you really really want - if it's not in the budget - DON'T DO IT!

Yes, I do feel that way sometimes. But my mom and dad got married in a friends house and my mom always says she regrets not having the big wedding. So like you said, when we are 50 we will look back and love it.
I have drawn the line on spending. For example: my dress. I loved one that was 3x the amount of money I spent, and I didn't get it because I could not justify spending that much money on a dress I am going to wear for one day. So I got the less expensive one and am extremely happy with it!!

I do! But I have tried really hard to stick to our budget. There are some things I we went over budget with, like the photographer, but others where we have compromised. I have been happy with everything I have done so far and will not go into serious debt because of the wedding. I think I have done so much research and saved a lot of money because of it, without sacrificing quality.

I THINK THAT SOME TIMES. ITS LIKE ME AND FH ARE KILLING OUR SELVES TO SAVE THIS MONEY AND ITS ALL GOING TO BE GONE OVER A COURSE OF ONE DAY. I LIVE IN TAMPA, FL AND THINGS ARE ALOT CHEAPER DOWN HERE. I WAS TALKING TO A FEW PEOPLE AND THE ONE PERSON I SPOKE TO HAD A WEDDING CEROMENY ON THE BEACH AND THEN THE COCKTAIL HOUR AND RECEPTION AT A HALL THAT WAS RIGHT OFF THE BEACH. THEY HAD 300 PEOPLE. FULL COURSE MEAL, VEIENSE(sp???) HOUR, DJ, PHOTOGRAPHER, VIDEOGRAPHER, ETC. THEY WERE COMPLAINING THAT THEY SPENT $16,000.00 TOTAL. THATS THEIR FINAL COST. I WAS LIKE YOU SHOULD BE THANKFUL. MY WEDDING IS COSTING ME CLOSE TO $35,000-$40,000.00.

I never thought I would do this, but now that I'm engaged it's what I want. B4 we started planning FI asked me if I'd rather get a house. I know what the smart answer would've been but I didn't want to look back on my life and regret not having a big wedding. I figure it'll work out and we can get a house later, for now our apartment is fine. In the meantime, I cringe when I write out checks, I put $$ into my account just to rip it right out again. It's not even in there long enough for me to pretend I'm rich! How can all these vendors put a price on every lil girls dream????

Oh I hear ya.... We didn't really set a budget, although we're trying to not go totally crazy...BUT....we just keep deciding to 'add one little thing' or upgrade one random thing...Well, all those 'little things' really really add up! It is a bit insane. I'm in a little bit of planning funk, so maybe you just hit a nerve, but seriously, as soon as anything is 'wedding' related, the price soars. Ugh.....

absolutely! only LI goes crazy like this! we didn't set a budget ... we knew what we could 'afford' but never really sat down ... just trying to come up w/ it as we go along ...

i felt the exact way. You usually never regret something you have done, but are more likely to regret something you did not do! So on with the check writing!!!

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!

We never actually set a budget (BIG MISTAKE) and now money is REALLY flying out of the window. For some reason we thought there was this bottomless pit and then you get NUMB to hearing prices like 'two thousand dollars' and 'three thousand dollars' to the point where I found myself saying things like, 'oh, only three hundred dollars for table numbers? Nice!'

WHAT???!!!!!

Am I insane???

That is sooo true about becoming numb to the pricing --- that is until you talk to brides out of the NYC/LI area who are paying like $15 - $30 per person Granted, it's not a 'lavish' LI wedding but they will still be married at the end of the day and celebrate it with family & friends.
