FH and I really don't like how fondant tastes - that hard 'plastic-y' texture and taste. But I do love how fondant wedding cakes look - anyone have pics of funky decorated wedding cakes that weren't fondant? How much can you do in terms of decoration with a regular cake? Thanks!!

all I can say is ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I changed my cake for that reason..sorry for anyone who likes fondant
And Mrswask talk to your baker...they can do the sugar flower decorations.

oh my god - I LOVE that stuff ! it's like the white part of a black and white cookie. - But just FYI - If you're really set on that matte look for the cake, you don't get THAT much frosting when they cut it - it's a very thin layer. -

I dont like it either, and although I havent picked a cake yet I can tell you its either going to be buttercream or fudge.

i love it too. if you go to a REALLY good baker, they can make buttercream look like fondant. i went to the city for some tastings and you cant tell the difference as far as look!

Fondant doesn't really have a good taste unless you flavor it with vanilla or something. Most bakers usually only put a very thin layer to give the cake the smooth finished look and underneath is a layer of buttercream to give it taste. Alot of good bakers can smooth buttercream out to almost the finish of fondant with a few natural grooves and air bubbles. If the cake you want doesn't have very precise detail try seeing if they can use buttercream instead. Good Luck!

I had a whipped cream frosting - it was awesome, and it looked beautiful. Very simple design - I don't have the picture with me, but it had the cream flowers cascading down the side.

I've only had fondant once and it $ucked, but I'm using it anyway because I love how it looks. It is a thin layer and there will be buttercream between the cake and the fondant, so you don't even have to come in contact with it.
