At least that's what I call it when you drive through a nice neighborhood w/beautiful homes and then suddenly realize you'll never be able to afford a home that nice?

Re: Does anyone else suffer from house depression?
I had to stop looking b/c it stressed me out. It wasn't fun anymore b/c reality hit hard. At one point I told my DH that I had to leave a house, I thought I was going to vomit. It is completely insane.

I feel the same way. DH and I looked at this house that was half the size of our apartment and the lady was asking 309K for it. There were no closets and the master bedroom could only fit a full size bed in it. I almost died. We are still looking but I told my agent to not waist my time on houses the size of our shed.

Re: Does anyone else suffer from house depression?
Or hopw about not being able to afford the DUMPS in a nice neighborhood?
And I mean a nice neighborhood as in ok - not Lloyd Harbor, not Centre Island. Like Kings Park nice -ok. REgular, safe, good schools, middle-class nice.
DUMPS = 350k+

We went to an open house yesterday in Queens. Owners wanted $689k for a total gut! Even the real estate agent rolled her eyes at the price. It was a DUMP.

That's exactly what we say! We could swing the mortgage, but not the extra $1000 a month for taxes.

Re: Does anyone else suffer from house depression?
I do. We can't even afford a 1-family. If we could find anything not scary for under 400k in Queens, but it's not happening. We're looking to get a two-family with sister and brother-in-law, but we can't even find a nice two-family that we like for under 750k! It's just so depressing. Actually we did like one house, and it was the first one we saw, but we thought 750 was too high then. We didn't realize that we weren't going to find anything nicer.

Re: Does anyone else suffer from house depression?
We looked at a house in South Merrick for $409k. We know that you are paying for the area on this one. The house was a 3 bedroom bungalow with 1 full bathroom. The house needed work on the exterior, needed a bathroom updated and had a redone kitchen, and redone hardwood floors. It also had a fire place. Lets just say that we walked in the front door, sneezed and were out the back door in 2 minutes. The 3 bedrooms were tiny, and so was the bathroom...The kitchen was nice, but it was an alley kitchen, it had a tiny dining area and the living room was tiny....no upstairs and no basement. If you could afford to blow the house up and back then it would be worth it....but we couldnt so we passed.
Another example was a cape in Bellmore on Duke Ct....It is in the area behind dairy Barn on Bellmore road. It was a Corner house and they were originally asking $389 and it was reduced to $375k.
The house was empty...and it looked as if it hadnt been lived in - in a few years. It had a new boiler, hot water heater, and windows I think but the house needed a complete gut....We didnt go down the rickety stair case to the basement but I can only imagine what it looked like. The rest of the house was disgusting....And they want $375k for that. There was no backyard, and a tiny side cement yard, and no garage.
Finally on Lincoln Ave off Newbridge in Bellmore there is a 3 level split, with a side yard, no back yard...and it is right behind a commercial business. This house was empty. It had 2 full baths, one was remodled. The rest of the house needed to be gutted and redone....The exterior needed to be resided, needed a new roof and gutters.....The windows were new though...They were asking $429k and the taxes were $9200...Crazy

I get even more upset when I see these big, gorgeous houses in some other states that are for less than 200k! But I guess they make less salary-wise there.

Re: Does anyone else suffer from house depression?
I suffer from house anxiety more so then house depression. We are waiting for DH to finish school, he has 10 months left, and we are ready to buy in NC, but banker told us intrest rate would be high because it is not our primary residence for those 10 months. I don't want to miss another boom. (we were suppose to buy in Tampa, but in the last year and a half homes sky rocketed)
